This book gathers contributions from researchers and practitioners that foster user-centric, cross-modal and sustainable transport systems in Europe. It reports on cutting-edge approaches discussed within the project MOBILITY4EU, a Coordination and Support Action funded by the European Commission, and presented at the second conference “Towards User Centric Transport in Europe” that took place in Brussels in Fall 2018. The respective papers describe innovative approaches to improving urban mobility and accessibility, achieving zero-emission mobility, and guaranteeing, seamless operations.  Co-creation approaches are also discussed.  Highlighting technological, socio-economic and political strategies alike, the book provides researches and stakeholders with a comprehensive, timely snapshot of current measures and challenges for the mobility of tomorrow.

Jurek Beckers in der DDR entstandenes Werk dient als Paradigma für die Untersuchung des sozialistischen Kulturbetriebs. Wie verhielten sich politisch-ideologische Interessen zu ökonomischen? Wie funktionierte der Literaturexport von Ost nach West? Wie wirkte sich die Existenz eines deutschen Nachbarstaates im Westen auf die im Kulturbereich der DDR Tätigen aus? Welcher Logik gehorchte die Informationserhebung und -vermittlung des MfS (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit)? Wie erfolgte die Kooperation, Konfliktbewältigung und Auseinandersetzung zwischen Autor, "gelenktem" Literaturbetrieb, politischer Führungselite und Staatssicherheitsdienst? Machtkämpfe wurden nicht nur durch die Position des einzelnen im System determiniert, da Macht instabil ist und daher stets neu strategisch hergestellt werden muss. Der diskurs- und textanalytische Zugriff auf zahlreiche unveröffentlichte Archivalien zeigt, dass die Kerndiskurse um Opposition und Öffentlichkeit entscheidungsbildend und handlungsformend waren: Alle Beteiligten bedienten sich dieser Diskurse, wenngleich sie höchst unterschiedlich funktionalisiert wurden, um Rollen- und Gruppenidentitäten zu schaffen, Positionen zu beziehen und eigene Interessen durchzusetzen. Die Zensur als zentrale Schaltstelle zwischen Opposition und Öffentlichkeit war letztlich kontraproduktiv, da die erforderliche institutionelle und diskursive Pflege das Zensierte konturieren half.

This edited volume presents research results of the PPP European Green Vehicle Initiative (EGVI), focusing on electric vehicle batteries. Electrification is one road towards sustainable road transportation, and battery technology is one of the key enabling technologies. However, at the same time, battery technology is one of the main obstacles for a broad commercial launch of electric vehicles. This book includes research contributions which try to bridge the gap between research and innovation in the field of battery technology for electric vehicles. The target audience primarily comprises researchers and experts in the field.

This book contains the papers presented at the 20th anniversary edition of the AMAA conference held in Brussels, Belgium in 2016. The theme of the conference was “Smart Systems for the Automobile of the Future”. The automobile is currently being reshaped at unprecedented pace. Automation and electrification are the two dominant megatrends which dramatically change the choice and design of components, systems, vehicular architectures and ultimately the way we use cars in the coming decades. Novel E/E architectures, vehicular connectivity and cloud services will be key to extending the perception and decision-making horizons of automated vehicles, to enable cooperative functions and a seamless digital user experience. The AMAA’s ongoing mission to detect novel trends in automotive ICT, electronics and smart systems and to discuss the technological implications is once again reflected in this volume. The book will be a valuable read for research experts and professionals in the automotive and smart systems industry but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.

In order to build a sustainable transport system for people and goods that meets the needs of all users, a truly integrated and seamless approach is needed, and the full potential of transformative technologies has to be exploited. This can only be achieved if user-centeredness, cross-modality and technology transfer become the paradigm of shaping future transport. Mobility4EU is a project funded by the European Commission that focusses on these topics and is working on delivering an action plan towards a user-centric and cross-modal European transport system in 2030. The authors of this contributed volume are dedicated scholars and practitioners connected to Mobility4EU either as partners or external contributors. Their contributions focus on understanding user needs and report on technologies and approaches that support the tailoring of a user-centered cross-modal transport system for passengers and freight on long distances and in the urban context.
