The work of the prize winning Peruvian American light artist Grimanesa Amorós is characterised by organic forms and an instinctive approach. The basis of her fascinating sculptures lies, however, in the natural sciences, social history and critical theory. Research and feeling establish a form of communication in her works. The expansive sculptures and video installations of Grimanesa Amorós have already been shown all over the world: from Mexico to Tel Aviv and from Beijing to Times Square in New York. She presented her latest works, “OCUPANTE” and “GOLDEN SECRET ROOM”, In the Ludwig Museum Koblenz. The artist creat es playful light installations which are so enigmatic that they permit interpretations on different levels. Together with an overview of her work, this volume reproduces the works in large format illustrations, thereby reproducing their fluidity and luminosity.

Although now poised for widespread popularity in China, abstract art still has a special status compared to figurative art. Otto Fried was born in Koblenz in 1922. Due to the emerging anti-Semitism in Germany, his family sent him to the United States, where he arrived in Portland, Oregon, United States in 1936. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and was deployed to various theatres of war in India, China and Burma. Upon his return, he enrolled in the Art and Architecture Department at the University of Oregon in 1947. At the end of 1949 he travelled to France to work with Fernand Léger, in whose studio he worked for two years. In 1951 he received his first solo exhibition in the American Library in Paris. Works by him were shown in New York as early as 1952. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, bought a monotype for the permanent collection in 1960.The exhibition catalogue offers an overview on Otto Fried’s career: works from the early days (1950s), which are presented with a few oil paintings and almost cubist-like drawings, form the foundation of an almost exclusively abstract visual language that the artist developed later. Compositions based primarily on cosmic disks and circles, of which Fried formulates numerous variations that are very lively in colour. This creates interweaving of depth and space, of a mostly melodic sound, which he concentrates in the center of the picture and allows it to subside towards the edges. Some sculptures expand the view of his work, which is multifaceted and varied to the present day.Text in English and German.

Over the past six decades, Sean Scully has been connected with the most diverse geographical locations, be it his many years of living in London, New York, Barcelona, Mooseurach, Berlin or Aix-en-Provence. In addition, he is constantly inspired by international exhibition projects and trips – such as to Morocco, Mexico and the island of Eleuthera. His restless attitude and always being keen to remain on the move, has left deep traces in his artistic work. Géographies therefore, focuses on Scully’s life stages and travels, the places where he lives, works and which particularly inspire him through 35 paintings, as well as watercolours, pastels and drawings by the artist.Many of his abstract compositions reflect his perception of urban space, the dynamic rhythm of the big city or the liberating calm of nature. Tan Ping came to Berlin in 1989 to study at the University of the Arts (UDK) and shortly afterwards witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall. China‘s opening to the Western World since 1985 has created new opportunities for a variety of bilateral relationships.Tan Ping consistently developed an abstract formal language that was significantly influenced by the Western art of Abstract Expressionism, Art Informel, Minimal and Conceptual Art. He uniquely combines these influences with his Chinese cultural roots, which stem from calligraphy and ink painting.As early as 1993, he created a conceptual approach with his ‘Time’ installation, in which he intertwined space, movement and time. Since then, he has continuously explored these factors and at the same time questioned his own self. Thirty years after completing his studies in Germany, this book offers a compendium of his research and artistic processes.Text in English and German.

Erwin Wortelkamp is internationally recognised primarily as a sculptor and founder of the landscape and sculpture park “Im Tal”. On the other hand, his graphic oeuvre of more than 4,000 sheets, which he created over the course of more than six decades, has received less attention to date. It ranges from sketches for projects and actions to architectural designs and independent free works. Colour has become prominent in these works since 1986 at the latest, coinciding with his second home in Italy. In serial cycles, Wortelkamp examines formal and thematic issues, occasionally linking art historical references with existential aspects. Here, artistic processes develop in a continuous dialogue.For Erwin Wortelkamp, dialogues and “interpenetrations” thus refer not only to visible, formal acts of creating, but also to physical and spiritual dimensions. Every form, every colour, every dialogic principle – be it in sculpture, on paper, or in written text – becomes an existential question for him.
