Sedierungen werden in der Medizin häufig durchgeführt. Eine Sonderform ist die terminale Sedierung bis zum Tod. Hierunter versteht man die medikamentöse Trübung des Bewusstseins bei einem Patienten, dessen Leiden anders nicht beherrschbar scheint. Sie gilt, wenn sie richtig indiziert und durchgeführt wird, als eine ethisch nicht fragwürdige Maßnahme. Unter einer Tötung auf Verlangen, auch aktive Sterbehilfe genannt, wird das Spritzen einer tödlichen Substanz verstanden, mit dem Ziel einen Menschen zu töten.
