In 1992 Bosnia descended into a savage and bitter civil war, which by 1995 had claimed over a quarter of a million lives. Following the Dayton Peace Agreement between the warring Bosnian Serbs, Muslims and Croats, NATO began its first land operation, taking over from the UN Protection Force. With a total of only 200 men, a British battlegroup was charged to enforce the peace in a 100km area, through which wound a front line separating the territory of the Bosnian Muslims from that of the Bosnian Serb forces. In this updated edition of the acclaimed book A Cold War, Brigadier Ben Barry has produced the definitive account of the British Army’s dangerous and groundbreaking operations in Bosnia.

The recent Afghanistan and Iraq wars were very controversial. The conflicts’ casualties, intractability and the apparent failure of the US and its allies to achieve their objectives mean that many see the wars as failures. This resulted in a loss of confidence in the West of the utility of force as an instrument of state power. Both wars have been well described by journalists. There is no shortage of memoirs. But there is little discussion of how the conduct of these wars and capabilities of the forces involved changed and evolved, and of the implications of these developments for future warfare. This book gives readers a clear understanding of the military character dynamics of both wars and how these changed between 2001 and 2014. This includes the strategy, operations, tactics and technology of the forces of the US and its allies, Afghan and Iraqi government forces as well as insurgents and militias, showing how they evolved over time. Many of these developments have wider relevance to future conflicts. The book identifies those that are of potential wider application to US, NATO and other western forces, to insurgents, as well as to forces of states that might choose to confront the west militarily.

This volume presents a collection of the most recent knowledge on the relationship between gender and fashion in historical and contemporary contexts. Through fourteen essays divided into three segments—how dress creates, disrupts, and transcends gender—the essays investigate gender issues through the lens of fashion. Crossing Gender Boundaries first examines how clothing has been, and continues to be, used to create and maintain the binary gender division that has come to permeate Western and westernized cultures. Next, it explores how dress can be used to contest and subvert binary gender expectations, before a final section that considers the meaning of gender and how dress can transcend it, focusing on unisex and genderless clothing. The essays consider how fashion can both constrict and free gender expression, explore the ways dress and gender are products of one other, and illuminate the construction of gender through social norms. Readers will find that through analysis of the relationship between gender and fashion, they gain a better understanding of the world around them.

Fashion Education explores how the classroom can transform the fashion industry towards body inclusion and social justice. The book is a collection of 17 essays by fashion educators from Australia, Canada, the US and the UK who recount their experiences, struggles and strategies of reimagining the exclusive foundation of fashion pedagogy and redesigning fashion curricula to centre Indigenous, Black, brown, fat, disabled, trans and queer worldviews, histories and bodies. This is the first book to explore the relationships between fashion pedagogy and social justice, and to map out new pedagogical frameworks and tools to redistribute power through fashion education. It shares the teaching practices of fashion educators implementing radical pedagogies and offers practical case studies that engage with a number of intersectional positions.Fashion Education engages with current pressing concerns for educators and is a valuable teaching resource for fashion educators – both theory and practice – working in art and design schools in Europe, the US and the UK. With chapters covering fashion theory, history, business, communication and design curricula to centre Indigenous, Black, brown, fat, disabled, trans, queer worldviews, histories and peoples it will appeal directly to the many disciplines within fashion. The discussions are also relevant to educators in other art, design and creative fields also looking to centre inclusion in their courses and the strategies presented will apply to them.Contributions from Tanveer Ahmed, Kevin Almond, Avalon Acaso, Ben Barry, Mal Burkinshaw, Johnathan Clancy, Robin J. Chantree, Deborah A. Christel, Brittany Dickinson, Greg Climer, Bianca Garcia, Denise Nicole Green, Alicia Johnson, Lucy Jones, Grace Jun, Carmen Keist, Riley Kucheran, Michael Mamp, Krys Osei, Lauren Downing Peters, Alexis Quinney, Kelly L. The study of men’s fashion has evolved from an emerging subject to a dynamic and growing field, intersecting with critical conversations on gender, race, sexuality, disability, colonialism, and globalization. The Handbook of Men’s Fashion pushes beyond conventional narratives by centering three guiding approaches: decentralizing and decolonizing men’s fashion studies, global viewpoints, and intersectionality. With 34 chapters from fashion and dress scholars, the collection offers a uniquely progressive perspective on the field’s development.Divided into six sections—Theoretical Perspectives, People and Bodies, Places, Objects and Products, Promotions and Business, and Popular Culture—the book examines how masculinity is fashioned, contested, and expressed across time and space. Topics range from national dress and subcultural style to queer and disabled masculinities, luxury branding, and digital fashion communities. By centering histories and communities that have been marginalized in previous scholarship, the chapters collectively expand the boundaries of men’s fashion studies.Rather than providing a definitive account, The Handbook of Men’s Fashion serves as an invitation to rethink the field, interrogate absences, and imagine new possibilities. It is an essential resource for scholars, students, and industry professionals invested in the past, present, and future of men’s fashion. The main audience for this book is academic, but it will also appeal to fashion practitioners, curators, and cultural critics, and to general readers interested in the history, culture, and meaning of men’s fashion and dress.

The savage Bosnian civil war was ended politically by the Dayton Peace Agreement. But this had to be implemented on the ground by NATO. How this was done by Second Battalion the Light Infantry is explained as never before in a richly detailed analysis of dangerous and challenging missions. The challenges of military operations in the war-torn Balkans are illustrated with vivid descriptions of operations and incidents, often in the words of the soldiers themselves.Writing in the Foreword the BBC journalist Martin Bell summarises their role: 'The troops risked their lives to save the lives of others. I remember reflecting, not for the first time, on the extraordinary quality of the British troops participating, on the dangers they faced across a mine-strewn landscape, and on the unique and unprecedented nature of the task before them. They interpreted their mandates bravely. They made a difference.'All royalties earned from the sales of this book will be donated to the charities The Army Benevolent Fund and Home for Heroes.
