Nazi occupied Poland. A German army officer investigates the murder of an abbess amid the horrors of brutal occupation.

Italy, autumn 1943, the Italian government has switched sides and declared war on Germany. Italy is divided, the North controlled by the fascists, the South liberated by Allied forces slowly fighting their way up the peninsula. Having survived hell on the Russian Front, Wehrmacht Major and aristocrat Martin Bora is sent to Verona. He is ordered to investigate the murder of a prominent local fascist: a bizarre death, threatening to discredit the regime's public image. Against the backdrop of relentless anti-partisan warfare and the tragedy of the Holocaust, a breathless chase begins.

Afte Stalingrad, Major Martin Bora is still serving on the Russian front as a German counterintelligence officer. Two Russian generals die in German custody. Everything appears to exclude the likelihood of foul play, but Bora begins an investigation.

Occupied Crete 1941. A Wehrmacht officer investigates the murder of a Swiss Red Cross representative, a friend to SS-Chief Himmler.

Spain, summer 1937, the civil war rages. A Wehrmacht officer assigned to Franco’s Spanish Foreign Legion investigates the murder of the poet Frederico Garcia Lorca, as does his opponent, an American member of the International Brigades.

Berlin, July 1944, a few weeks before the attempted assassination of Hitler by Claus von Stauffenberg. Bora is ordered to investigate the murder of a dazzling clairvoyant, a major star since the days of the Weimar Republic, with deep connections to those in power. But there is more at stake: Bora and Stauffenberg inevitably meet.

October 1944, in the Republic of Salò, a German puppet state in the north of Italy and the last fascist stronghold in the country. Martin Bora must investigate the theft of a painting by Titian. While Bora’s inquiry proceeds among many difficulties, discovering three dead bodies throws an even more sinister light on the scene.
