The Ethiopian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELC) was formed in 1960 as a fruit of the mission work of Swedish Mission Bibeltrogna Vänner (SMBV), founded in 1911, its roots dating back to the evangelical revival that swept across Sweden in the 19th century. The main goal of the society was to reach the Oromo people in Ethiopia with the Gospel. In 1911 mission work began in Eritrea and in 1921 the first SMBV missionaries reached Addis Ababa, from where work was expanded into the cities of Harar and Dire-Dawa as well as into the Arsi province. The Ethiopian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELC) was founded in 1960. It consisted at that time of congregations that had emerged as a fruit of the work of the Swedish missionary society Bibeltrogna Vänner (SMBV) conducted in central, eastern, and southern Ethiopia. When the EELC was founded, its members were few, estimated at around 500. Since then, the Church has grown to have nearly 30,000 members. SMBV was founded in 1911 and almost immediately began missionary work in Eritrea. However, the main goal was to reach the Oromo people of Ethiopia. In 1921, SMBV missionaries began work in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa. From there, the work extended to the cities of Harar and Dire-Dawa in the east and to Arsi province in the south. SMBV's work, which had expanded rapidly, was greatly influenced by the attack of fascist Italy on Ethiopia in the autumn of 1935. Due to the subsequent Italian occupation, all SMBV's missionaries had to leave the country in 1936. To some extent, however, the work was able to continue during the occupation, despite the suffering and restrictions of the Ethiopian employees and parishioners. The book, which is the second part in a series describing the history of the EELC, deals with the period 1935 to1941 when Ethiopia was attacked and occupied by fascist Italy. The book has general and specific sections. The general ones briefly describe Italy's war of aggression and the subsequent occupation of the country. The specific parts descibe what happened to SMBV´s missionaries and their Ethiopian associates during the war (until September 1936) and what Ethiopian Christians associated with SMBV experienced during the occupation. The specific sections also include an account of visits to Ethiopia October 1938 - January 1939 by representatives from SMBV in Sweden, and an account of missionary work among Ethiopian refugees in Kenya 1939 - 1942.

Boken är en tredje del i en serie som redogör för bakgrunden till och bildandet av den etiopiska evangelisk-lutherska kyrkan (EELC). EELC bildades 1960. Den baserades på församlingar som hade vuxit fram som en frukt av det arbete som den svenska missionen Bibeltrogna Vänner (BV) bedrivit i centrala, östra och södra Etiopien. När EELC grundades fanns det få medlemmar; antalet uppskattades till maximalt 300. Sedan dess har kyrkan vuxit och har idag omkring 30 000 medlemmar. BV grundades 1911 och inledde missionsarbete i Eritrea. Huvudmålet var dock att nå Oromo-folket i Etiopien. År 1921 nådde de första BV-missionärerna Addis Abeba, varifrån arbetet utvidgades till städerna Harar och Dire-Dawa i öster samt till Arsi-provinsen i söder. I oktober 1935 attackerades Etiopien av det fascistiska Italien. På grund av den efterföljande italienska ockupationen tvingades BV:s missionärer lämna landet. Missionsarbetets utveckling fram till detta skede beskrivs i bok nr 1 i serien. Bok nr 2 behandlar perioden 1935 till 1941, det vill säga den tid då Etiopien var ockuperat av det fascistiska Italien. Det var en tid som innebar många svårigheter och prövningar för det etiopiska folket, inte minst för evangeliskt kristna. BV:s missionsarbetet kunde dock fortsätta inom några församlingar i landet. Under denna period blev det också möjligt för BV att bedriva missionsarbete bland etiopiska flyktingar i Kenya. Hoppet om att kunna återuppta missionsarbete i Etiopien tändes när Etiopien befriades i maj 1941. Det pågående världskriget gjorde dock att det var först 1945 som BV:s missionsarbete i Etiopien kunde återupptas. Det skedde efter år av längtan, både i Etiopien och i Sverige. Från och med 1945 kunde flera missionärer skickas ut och arbetet kunde återupptas. Arbetet expanderade snabbt, särskilt under 1950-talet. En viktig milstolpe var bildandet i januari 1960 av en luthersk kyrka, numera kallad Ethiopian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELC) I slutet av 1975 tog kyrkan formellt över ansvaret för allt arbete som BV hade utvecklat och drivit. Denna bok, som alltså är nummer 3 i serien täcker perioden från 1941 till 1975.
