Designation of a special year devoted to children underscores the widespread recognition of the importance of scientific advances and humane concern over the welfare of children. Clinical child psychology, the topic of the present serial publication, is especially important in recognition of the year of the child. Clinical child psychology at once combines areas of basic and applied research. The subject matter is concerned with understanding the nature of child development and the many influences upon which such development depends. Moreover, the clinical orientation emphasizes the extension of this research to top­ ics that directly affect the welfare of children and adolescents. Advances in Clinical Child Psychology publishes scholarly reviews and evaluations of many different areas of research and application. In the current volume, the third in the series, a variety of topics are addressed. These include the development of social behavior, the emergence and modification of sex-typed behavior, family systems, self-help proce­ dures to train parents, assessment of intelligence, childhood obesity, the development and treatment of asthma, pediatric psychology, treatment of severely disturbed children, language development, and education of disadvantaged elementary school students.

Since the beginning of this series, increasing amounts of innovative and promising research have focused on the classification, etiology, and development of childhood psychopathol­ ogy. This volume contains chapters on the classification of autism, the nature of sexual abuse, the development of social deficiencies and affec­ tion, and the important variables of maternal depression, infant-child interactions, sibling interactions, and early temperament. This volume also highlights another significant trend in clinical child psychology-its increasing rapprochement with developmental psychology. The difficult issue of suicide by children and adolescents is dealt with, the role of cognition in behavior disorders is explored, and the clinical applications of direct behavioral observation are evaluated. Although the fields of pediatric psychology and prevention have been treated in earlier volumes in the series, pro­ gress in these fields has been so rapid that chapters on each topic have been included in the present volume. A decade ago, Advances in Clinical Child Psychology was conceived to provide approximately annual updates on the forward edge of research and practice in this rapidly growing field. A look back at the 56 chapters published in previous volumes provides a broad overview of the direc­ tion of advancement in clinical child psychology, at least as viewed by one collection of editors, consulting editors, and authors. The trends are clear: There have been decreasing numbers of advances in modes and methods of therapy, an increasing emphasis on the family, a renewed interest in experimental psychopathology (studies of classification, etiol­ ogy, and prognosis), a growing rapprochement between biological and psychological perspectives, and continued strong interest in cognition and social relationships. The current volume clearly shows these directions in the growth of the field. One chapter discusses etiology, four are concerned with the psychopathology of specific diagnostic categories, one takes an ex­ panded cognitive approach to social competence, and two look at the family system by examining the effects of male parents and children on other members of the family. A final chapter opens discussion on the important topic of the nature of excellence in the training of clinical child psychologists. It is hoped that this chapter will initiate a national di­ alogue on this multifaceted and often neglected topic.

But the overwhelming theme of this volume is the relationship between biolog­ ical and psychological variables. In choosing these chapters, we believe that we are merely reflecting the changing nature of research in the field.

The key topics of aggression and stealing are dealt with in two chapters, and five chapters deal with the variety of topics that were formerly under the umbrella concept of minimal brain dysfunction.
