A wide space in this play is fulfilled by the analysis of the relationship between the European imperialist and the submissive native, shown by theexample of Prospero, the rightful duke of Milan, and the creature Caliban, the savage and deformed slave 1. Nearly 400 years later, in 1982, the South African author Nadine Gordimer deals with thesituation of the abused slave in her novel July s People again. She creates a fictional situation where the former white-coloured masters have lost their power after a successful revolution of the suppressed black majority. The white middle-class-family the Smales become themselves sla ves as they are from now on dependent from their servant July, who offers them a refuge in his homeland. In the upcoming analysis I want to show that Nadine Gordimer created a situation which can be seen as If Caliban s wish came true... , as she continues the attempt of the slave to recover his liberty. I want to compare both novels in order to prove that Gordimer orientated herself very much on Shakespeare s play and makes use of typical characteristics of the master and the slave we find in there. Turn-taking is considered to play an essential role in structuring people's social interactions in terms of control and regulation of conversation. Therefore the system of turn-taking has become object of analyses both for linguists and for sociologists. The starting point of the analysis was to show regularities of conversational structure by describing the ways in which participants take turns in speaking. The first important approach to turn-taking was made by Duncan in 1972. From then on turn-taking has been accepted as one of the standard tasks "e;which mustbe managed if interaction is to occur 1. The most influential work in the area of turn-taking is the study by Sacks, Schegloff and Jefferson ( SS&J ) from 1974. They embody the so called American approach of conversation analysis . Their theoretical approach has to be seen as standard work for further discussions, although there have been several objections against it. SS&J regarded informal conversational settings and analysed the conventions which regulate turn-taking in there. They found out that there is an existence ofrules the participants are aware of. SS&J say that the central principle in conversation is that speakers follow in taking turns to avoid gaps and overlaps in conversation 2 If gaps occur they are short. SS&J propose a simplest system for the organisation of turn-taking in conversation. The model consists of two components: the turn-construction and the turn-taking component. Instead, the list is fixed on poets like Ted Hughes, Philip Larkin or Seamus Heaney. This has got several reasons: it is not the fact that Charles Tomlinson has published only a few works, but it is the difficulty to put him and his poems in one category. Tomlinson, who has published since 1950 in each decade, has been influenced by the different conceptions about art throughout the years. The poem I want to analyse was written in 1953, at the beginning of Tomlinson s writing, in a time, when English poetry was dominated by the realistic style of writing of the Movement poets. This poem deals about the English painter John Constable, who is famous for his landscape paintings and especially his cloud pictures. The poem is a good example to show Tomlinson s position towards the term of art in general and his opinion about contemporary poetry. As he is today most famous for his poems about natural phenomena, this poem can be regarded as one of his most meaningful ones. The upcoming analysis should discuss this poem in order to its content, structure and style and should especially answer the question where in the 20thcentury Tomlinson and his concept of poetry should be integrated and where he stands for.

Therefore I will refer tosome websites dealing with Chicano cinema. I will begin my analysis with describing the Hispanic image in Hollywood. Theirpresentation in 20th century mainstream cinema is not just decisive for the image thatconsumers have about the Latino culture, but has also been decisive for the obstaclestowards an Hispanic establishment in Hollywood.
