For the 8th time since 1991 we invite researchers to participate in the Do- mund Fuzzy-Days. I am very glad that our conference has established itself as an international forum for the discussion of new results in the ?eld of Com- tational Intelligence. Again all papers had to undergo a thorough review: each one was judged by ?ve referees to guarantee a solid quality of the programme. From the beginning of the Fuzzy-Days on, Lot? A. Zadeh felt associated withtheconference.Iwouldliketoexpressmygratitudeforhisencouragement and support and I am particularly glad that he once again delivers a keynote speech. Much to my pleasure Janusz Kacprzyk, Jong-Hwan Kim, Enrique Trillas and Eyke Hullermey .. er have also agreed to present new results of their work as keynote speakers. With Prof. Jong-Hwan Kim of the KoreanAdvanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) a colleague takes part in this year's Fuzzy-Days to whom I am indebted because he has inspired me and my colleagues to turn our attention towards the exciting ?eld of Robot Soccer. Within a few years Robot Soccer has become an accepted test ?eld for robotic research and the development of Multi Agent Systems.The importance of Computational Intelligence for these applications is evident. We address this topic not only with a dedicated session, but we will also organise a robot soccer match to demonstrate to the participants the entertaining quality of robot soccer as well as the challenging scienti?c problems.

Computational Intelligence (CI) has emerged as a novel and highly diversified paradigm supporting the design, analysis and deployment of intelligent systems. This book presents a careful selection of the field that very well reflects the breadth of the discipline. The papers are devoted to foundational and practical issues in fuzzy systems, neural networks, evolutionary algorithms, and machine learning and thus cover the whole range of computational intelligence.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Computational Intelligence, 7th Dortmund Fuzzy Days, held in Dortmund, Germany, in October 2001. The 71 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from an overwhelming number of submissions. Also included are four invited contributions and 24 poster presentations. The papers are devoted to foundational and practical issues in fuzzy systems, soft computing, neural networks, evolutionary algorithms, and machine learning and thus cover the whole range of computational intelligence.

Das Buch enthält die am 1. und 2. Oktober 1990 in Dortmund auf der ersten gemeinsamen GME/GI/ITG-Fachtagung "Rechnergestützter Entwurf und Architektur mikroelektronischer Systeme " gehaltenen Vorträge. Diese Fachtagung diente dem Austausch aktueller Erfahrungen und Forschungsergebnisse in den Bereichen "CAD für Mikroelektronik" und "Architekturen mikroelektronischer Systeme" im deutschsprachigen Raum. Die Vorträge über abgeschlossene Forschungen werden daher ergänzt durch Berichte über noch in der Entwicklung begriffene Systeme und konzeptionelle Vorarbeiten. Die Vorträge beziehen sich auf folgende Themen: - Spezifikation hochintegrierter Schaltungen - Architektur-, Logik-Synthese und Optimierung - Physikalischer Entwurf - Verifikation - Testmethoden und Zuverlässigkeit - Simulation und Modellierung - CAD-Umgebungen - Entwurfsmethodik und Entwurfsmanagement - Architekturen mikroelektronischer Systeme - Technologiemodellierung.

Fuzzy Logik fasziniert weltweit Wissenschaftler, Entwickler und Anwender gleichermaBen. Der schnelle kommerzielle bzw. industrielle Einsatz der Fuzzy-Technologie verspricht im zunehmend globalen Wettbewerb erhebliche Vorteile. Allerdings fehlen weithin gezielte Informationen fiber die Voraussetzungen und Risiken der Entwicklung von Anwendungen. Die Dortmunder Fuzzy-Tage bieten Entscheidungstragem und Ingenieuren aus den verschiedensten Bereichen und Branchen Gelegenheit, aktuelle Forschungsergebnissse und Entwicklungen kennenzulemen, Anwendungsfelder flir diese auBerst zukunftstrachtige Technologie zu diskutieren und Mog- lichkeiten flir Kooperationen zu erortem. Der vorliegende Tagungsband enthiilt die schriftlichen Ausarbeitungen der Vortrage der 2. Dortmunder Fuzzy-Tage. Diese Veranstaltung fand am 9. und 10. Juni 1992 in Dortmund statt und erfreute sich einer fiberaus groBen Resonanz. Der erste Tag umfaBte mehrere eingeladene Vortrage intemational renommierter Wissenschaftler, die dem Wissenschaftlichen Beirat der Fuzzy- Initiative Nordrhein-Westfalen angehOren. Allen voran ist hier der Nestor der Fuzzy Logik, Prof. Dr. Lotfi A. Zadeh, zu nennen.Diese Vortrage stellen aktuelle Trends und Entwicklungsrichtungen der Fuzzy-Forschung dar. Derzweite Tag orientierte sich an Erfahrungsberichten aus der industriellen Praxis. Es wurden abgeschlossene, laufende und kfinftige Entwicklungsvor- haben vorgestellt. Mein groBer Dank gilt an dieser Stelle den Vortragenden sowie den Mit- wirkenden an der veranstaltungsbegleitenden Ausstellung flir ihr Interesse, ihre Arbeitsergebnisse bzw. Produkte zur Diskussion zu stellen. Zu besonderem Dank bin ich Herrn Kollegen Zadeh verpflichtet, der trotz sei- ner vieWiltigen Verpflichtungen emeut unserer Bitte nachgekommen ist und das Hauptreferat gehalten hat. Den Mitgliedem des Organisationsausschusses sei flir die Ubemahme der nicht unerheblichen organisatorischen Arbeiten gedankt, die mit der Vorbereitung und Begleitung dieser Tagung verbunden waren.

Die Weltwirtschaft steht an der Schwelle zu einem Zeitalter intelligenter Systeme. Viele Untemehmen werden sich kiinftig im zunehmend globalen Wettbewerb nur dann behaupten konnen, wenn es ihnen gelingt, ihre Produkte und Verfahren mit einem hohen MaB an Intelligenz auszustatten (,Machine Intelligence Quotient'). Gerade die Bundesrepublik Deutschland ist als sogenanntes Hochlohnland und mit ihren sehr begrenzten namrlichen Ressourcen zur Sicherung ihres wirtschaftlichen Wohlstandes auf eine schnelle Umsetzung fortschrittlicher Methoden und Technologien angewiesen. Eine zentrale Rolle bei der Entwicklung intelligenter Produkte und Verfahren spielen neue methodische Ansatze der Informatik. Die gesellschaftlichen Krafte in der Bundesrepublik haben dies erkannt, bis hin zu GewerkschaftsfUhrem, die intelligente Produkte fiir den Weltrnarkt fordem. Der erste Absatz dieses V orwortes starnmt iibrigens von Giinther Einert, dem Minister fUr Wirtschaft, Mittelstand und Technologie des Landes NRW.Neben der Mikro-Elektronik und der Mikro-Systemtechnik inklusive cler Mikro- Sensorik als Basistechnologien werden Fuzzy-Logik, Kiinstliche Neuronale Netze und Evolutionare Algorithmen sowie Kombinationen davon als Problemlosungstechniken bei der Entwicklung der geforderten intelligenten Produkte eine wesentliche Rolle spielen. In einem irrt der Minister allerdings: neu sind die methodischen Ansatze, auf die er sich bezieht, durchaus nicht. Neu ist nur ihre erfolgreiche Umsetzung. Wir haben die Thematik der 4. Dortmunder Fuzzy-Tage erweitert und dies mit dem Untertitel "Fachtagung iiber Computational Intelligence" zum Ausdruck gebracht. Wir sind nicht die ersten, die eine Fachtagung tiber Computational Intelligence ankiindigen (das war IEEE), aber wir sind nach meiner Kenntnis die ersten, die eine so1che Fachtagung durchfUhren.
