This comprehensive volume provides a thorough overview of 20th- and 21st-century military doctrines worldwide.Military Doctrine: A Reference Handbook takes a thorough look at 20th- and 21st-century military doctrines around the world. It excerpts relevant English-language scholarly and governmental literature to paint a picture of how military doctrine has developed in recent history, what military doctrines are currently operating on the world stage, and where military doctrine is heading in the near future. The book casts a wide net, scanning the relevant government documents, international agreements, monographs, journals, conference papers, and Internet resources to present a thorough overview of the importance of military doctrine in today's highly unstable world. Because military institutions are important formulators of national military doctrine and not merely implementers, this book examines the roles played by military organizations around the world. With the proliferation of independent military scholars and the widespread influence of their work in the Internet age, the book also scans the "gray" literature and describes its effects on military doctrine.

International trade plays an enormous role in economic growth and prosperity. This activity can also be used to transfer military equipment, knowledge, and technology to hostile governments and transnational terrorist and criminal organizations seeking to attack and destroy their enemies. The U.S. and other countries have used economic sanctions such as export controls to try to restrict and eliminate the transfer of weapons and financial assets to these governments and organizations. This work examines how the U.S. has attempted to restrict the export of national security sensitive equipment, finance, knowledge, and technology since World War II with varying degrees of success and failure. It also examines how multiple U.S. Government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and international government organizations seek to influence U.S. international trade, foreign, and security policies while concluding that some export controls are essential for promoting and defending U.S. national security interests.

This book analyzes the development and evolution of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, a multinational aircraft endeavor involving the U.S. and many of its allies. The author provides a historical overview of jet fighter aircraft, discussing the different generations of these planes and their technical characteristics, as well as an outline of emerging international geopolitical and security trends the F-35 may see combat in. By examining the role of defense industries, domestic politics, and governmental oversight of the Joint Strike Fighter in various countries, the author concludes that this aircraft will be deployed in most of these countries to replace their aging jet fighter fleets and combat potential military aggression from China, Russia, and other revisionist international powers.

Examining open access civilian and military space policy, strategy, and doctrine documents, this book highlights emerging trends and developments in military space strategy.Bert Chapman collects public documents from Australia, Canada, the European Union, NATO, the United States, and the United Kingdom from 2017 onward to illustrate space’s critical importance to national and international security and to multiple areas of civilian economic and personal use including climate change, food security, personal and global communications, and the potential for expanded space exploration. In light of recent revelations that Russia may be capable and desirous of exploding nuclear weapons in space to damage civilian and military space-based infrastructures of the U.S. and other countries and China’s increasing space assertiveness and capabilities, it is more important than ever that civilian readers have the access and background knowledge necessary to parse publicly available documents relating to space strategy so that they may effectively participate in the legislative and regulatory policymaking processes of their governments.
