This proceedings volume gathers a selection of outstanding research papers presented at the third Conference on Isogeometric Analysis and Applications, held in Delft, The Netherlands, in April 2018. This conference series, previously held in Linz, Austria, in 2012 and Annweiler am Trifels, Germany, in 2014, has created an international forum for interaction between scientists and practitioners working in this rapidly developing field. Isogeometric analysis is a groundbreaking computational approach that aims to bridge the gap between numerical analysis and computational geometry modeling by integrating the finite element method and related numerical simulation techniques into the computer-aided design workflow, and vice versa. The methodology has matured over the last decade both in terms of our theoretical understanding, its mathematical foundation and the robustness and efficiency of its practical implementations. This development has enabled scientists andpractitioners to tackle challenging new applications at the frontiers of research in science and engineering and attracted early adopters for this his novel computer-aided design and engineering technology in industry. The IGAA 2018 conference brought together experts on isogeometric analysis theory and application, share their insights into challenging industrial applications and to discuss the latest developments as well as the directions of future research and development that are required to make isogeometric analysis an established mainstream technology.

The papers included in this volume provide an overview of the state of the art in approximative implicitization and various related topics, including both the theoretical basis and the existing computational techniques. The novel idea of approximate implicitization has strengthened the existing link between Computer Aided Geometric Design and classical algebraic geometry. There is a growing interest from researchers and professionals both in CAGD and Algebraic Geometry, to meet and combine knowledge and ideas, with the aim to improve the solving of industrial-type challenges, as well as to initiate new directions for basic research. This volume will support this exchange of ideas between the various communities.

This volume contains revised papers that were presented at the international workshop entitled Computational Methods for Algebraic Spline Surfaces (“COMPASS”), which was held from September 29 to October 3, 2003, at Schloß Weinberg, Kefermarkt (A- tria). The workshop was mainly devoted to approximate algebraic geometry and its - plications. The organizers wanted to emphasize the novel idea of approximate implici- zation, that has strengthened the existing link between CAD / CAGD (Computer Aided Geometric Design) and classical algebraic geometry. The existing methods for exact implicitization (i. e. , for conversion from the parametric to an implicit representation of a curve or surface) require exact arithmetic and are too slow and too expensive for industrial use. Thus the duality of an implicit representation and a parametric repres- tation is only used for low degree algebraic surfaces such as planes, spheres, cylinders, cones and toroidal surfaces. On the other hand, this duality is a very useful tool for - veloping ef?cient algorithms. Approximate implicitization makes this duality available for general curves and surfaces. The traditional exact implicitization of parametric surfaces produce global rep- sentations, which are exact everywhere. The surface patches used in CAD, however, are always de?ned within a small box only; they are obtained for a bounded parameter domain (typically a rectangle, or – in the case of “trimmed” surface patches – a subset of a rectangle). Consequently, a globally exact representation is not really needed in practice.

The two ?elds of Geometric Modeling and Algebraic Geometry, though closely - lated, are traditionally represented by two almost disjoint scienti?c communities. Both ?elds deal with objects de?ned by algebraic equations, but the objects are studied in different ways. While algebraic geometry has developed impressive - sults for understanding the theoretical nature of these objects, geometric modeling focuses on practical applications of virtual shapes de?ned by algebraic equations. Recently, however, interaction between the two ?elds has stimulated new research. For instance, algorithms for solving intersection problems have bene?ted from c- tributions from the algebraic side. The workshop series on Algebraic Geometry and Geometric Modeling (Vilnius 1 2 2002 , Nice 2004 ) and on Computational Methods for Algebraic Spline Surfaces 3 (Kefermarkt 2003 , Oslo 2005) have provided a forum for the interaction between the two ?elds. The present volume presents revised papers which have grown out of the 2005 Oslo workshop, which was aligned with the ?nal review of the European project GAIA II, entitled Intersection algorithms for geometry based IT-applications 4 using approximate algebraic methods (IST 2001-35512) .

Previous GMP conferences were held in Pittsburgh (2006), Beijing (2004), Tokyo (2002), and Hong Kong (2000). This, the 5th GMP conference, was held in Hangzhou, one of the most beautiful cities in China. GMP 2008 received 113 paper submissions, covering a wide spectrum of - ometric modeling and processing, such as curves and surfaces, digital geometry processing, geometric feature modeling and recognition, geometric constraint solving, geometric optimization, multiresolution modeling, and applications in computer vision, image processing, scienti?c visualization, robotics and reverse engineering. Each paper was reviewed by at least three members of the program committee andexternalreviewers.Basedonthe recommendations ofthe revi- ers, 34 regular papers were selected for oral presentation, and 17 short papers were selected for poster presentation. All selected papers are included in these proceedings. We thank all authors, external reviewers and program committee members for their great e?ort and contributions, which made this conference a success.
