This book offers a range of approaches and specific examples of how a sample of internationally leading research-intensive universities, from a variety of regions around the world, work to improve teaching and learning. It describes and analyzes broad university initiatives and approaches that have the potential of driving institution-wide change processes in teaching and learning, thus providing a link between strategic ambitions and cultural transformation in the universities. Globally, research-intensive universities are increasingly pressured to increase their performance in both research and education. However, while much focus internationally has been devoted to how universities are working to boost their research performance, less is known about how internationally leading universities are working to improve teaching and learning. Through comparative cases drawn from universities in Europe, Asia and the US, key practices and lessons are identified and showcased providinga unique insight into the ways internationally leading research universities work to support and enhance staff engagement in teaching and learning. It will be essential reading for researchers and advanced students working in Higher Education and Sociology, particularly those with an interest in comparative studies.

Globalization, massification of tertiary education, and ICT revolution have radically altered the tertiary education environment posing new challenges to governments, higher education providers and other key stakeholders in terms of relevance and credibility of provisions. With the radical alterations it became clear that the traditional means for internal and external evaluations are no longer adequate to ensure the acceptable level of tertiary education performance to meet the society development needs. Considering one of the primary roles of quality assurance in tertiary education is ensuring relevance and credibility of tertiary education provisions to the ever-changing needs of the macro world of industry, politics and society at large, more and more governments are currently prioritizing quality assurance to drive the required changes in governance of higher educatuon systems, mutual recognition across national borders, and accountability to the public in different parts of the world. As part of its mission, the INQAAHE has undertaken a Global Study of both external and internal quality assurance developments worldwide in cooperation with the regional QA networks (e.g. ENQA, CANQATE, APQN, ANQAHE, CEENQA) in 2017–2018. The regions covered in this scoping study are as follows: Africa, the Arab Region, Asia-Pacific, Eastern and Western Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Northern America.Global Trends in Higher Education Quality Assurance: Challenges and Opportunities in Internal and External Quality Assurance provides a comprehensive coverage of the trends and developments in higher education quality assurance as they refer to legitimacy/trust, efficiency and relevance.

This book discusses essential topics on understanding the development and changes in higher educational systems in Asia, and explores governance, quality assurance, stakeholder engagement, and innovation in the post-massified era from an Asian perspective. While each of the three sections has a particular focus area, the common thread across all chapters is the local responses and relevance to global discourse. In each chapter, authors highlight the ways in which concerns were raised, compromises made, and challenges overcome. This book serves as a valuable resource for various stakeholders, including university administrators, admissions counselors, higher education professionals, and managers working with international programs, students in higher education programs, policy makers, scholars interested in higher education and policies, various knowledge industries, and Quality Assurance (QA) agencies. Readers learn from the challenges discussed and be inspired to design and implement innovative initiatives and strategies. Given the diversity of partnerships and innovation in research, teaching, and learning, there is no one way or ‘how to’ list of steps for effective higher education systems. Rather, readers glean insights from various scholars who recognize the value of collaborating across oceans and borders.
