This book examines the issue of territorial control by violent jihadist groups, using a comparative perspective.The book argues that in many parts of the world the connection between a state and the control over territory is not as close as presented by conventional political maps, and therefore it is necessary to analyse the territoriality of non-state actors as well. Based on a variety of case studies, the work looks at different levels of connection between the violent Islamist groups and territory, dividing them into non-territorial, semi-territorial and territorial groups. While the majority of the cases are located in the Middle East (Islamic State, Al-Qaeda, Al-Qaeda at the Arabian Peninsula, Ha´yat Tahrir al-Sham, Hamas and Hezbollah), the book also draws cases from Africa (groups in the western Sahel, Al-Shabaab and Boko Haram), South Asia (Taliban), and East Asia (Abu Sayyaf). This book presents a geopolitical analysis of the upcoming human exploration of celestial bodies in the inner solar system by the major space powers.It utilizes a systemic approach to the analysis of political events in space to develop a comprehensive overview of the factors influencing planned or proposed missions to the selected objects – the Moon, Mars, and asteroids. As a result of this analysis, the book establishes forward-looking scenarios of possible developments to highlight the main fault lines of the upcoming operations beyond the currently most heavily utilized terrestrial orbits. This framework is rooted in a holistic overview of factors relevant to the mid-term settlement and mining efforts and allows us to highlight the main focal points that will determine the future power distribution inside the inner solar system. The methodology is based on the analysis of an interplay of numerous factors deemed crucial for the decision-making of the major space powers and their capacities to promote their interests in a given region. Major space powers are, for the purpose of this book, understood as those actors with a realistic ability to participate in or lead the inner solar system colonization and mining missions in the mid-term future for which scenario-making is the most suitable. Given the realities of space travel, however, smaller actors are also taken into consideration as a part of cooperative efforts which are, nonetheless, dominated by the major players or, alternatively, as possible spoilers of the efforts in several regional settings. As both China and Russia seek to extend their global influence and challenge the liberal world order, Africa is becoming increasingly critical to contemporary geopolitics. This book argues that it is within Africa that we can best understand the synergies and conflicts between Russian and Chinese approaches.The book demonstrates that whilst Chinese and Russian approaches tend to be more complementary when facing a substantial presence of Western actors, in general, their policies towards African states are far from united. This is evident in events such as the disruption of Chinese economic deals in the Sahel under the oversight of Russian paramilitary forces, or the takeover of Russian oil production projects in Uganda by Chinese state-owned companies. Rooted in a comparative study of six African regions (North Africa; the "Golden Triangle" of Libya, Sudan and the Central African Republic; the Horn of Africa; the Western Sahel; the Great Lakes region; and Southern Africa), the book uncovers the drivers behind cooperation and conflict between the two revisionist powers.
