Reviewing research evidence for nursing practice: systematic reviews highlights the key issues involved in conducting different types of systematic reviews - encompassing qualitative studies, quantitative studies and combining quantitative and qualitative studies. It enables nurses and researchers to understand the key principles involved in preparing systematic reviews and to critically appraise the reviews they read and evaluate their usefulness in developing their own practice.

Each section starts with an overview of the methodology, followed by a selection of systematic reviews carried out in specialist areas of nursing practice. Part 1 explores systematic reviews and meta-analysis of quantitative research, part 2 explores meta-synthesis and meta-study of qualitative research and part 3 addresses integrative reviews that combine both qualitative and quantitative evidence. The final part explores the use of systematic reviews in service and practice development.

Though slogans such as ''nursing must be a research-based profession'' have been around for a long time, recent initiatives such as Nursing Development Units (NDUs), quality assurance and evidence-based practice have moved nursing to the forefront amongst health professions in taking seriously the promotion of rational care based on a critical appraisal of past practices and the evaluation of new ideas and techniques. This is the first book to examine research and development in clinical nursing practice. It explains how to do it and how to apply it.

Intermediate care comprises strategies which allow early discharge from acute care, prevent admission or re-admission to acute care and avoid bed-blocking in both acute and long-term residential care. It encompasses a range of short-term options including rapid response, hospital at home, residential rehabilitation, supported discharge and day rehabilitation. Continuing Care is delivered on a long-term basis in a variety of settings and often includes an element of rehabilitation.

Although these two types of care have distinct objectives, they are interrelated as changes in the supply of one type of care may affect demands for the other. In addition, from a patient perspective, intermediate and continuing care might be seen as part of the continuum of care options that are supplied to meet their needs. This book argues for consideration of intermediate and continuing care as part of the care continuum that provides integrated care adopting whole system approaches.

This edited volume explores policy, practice and current issues in intermediate and continuing care. It will be of interest to allhealth and social care professionals involved in the provision and planning of care for older people. It falls in three parts: intermediate care, continuing care, and a shorter section on patient and public involvement and future directions.
