Damage and reparation are central themes of human existence. Melanie Klein, among other pivotal discoveries, noted our capacity for destructiveness towards others and ourselves. More importantly, she accented the centrality of reparation for mental health. Acceptance of the truth, 'inner' and 'outer', is essential to this process. The author goes on to explain the phenomenon of reparation around the themes of truth (aletheia), faith (pistis) and repentance/transformation (metanoia), especially as they appear in the philosophical works of Martin Heidegger and the psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion. He then continues following the phenomenon of metanoia, tracing it sequentially in the works of Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion, Martin Heidegger, C.G. Jung and R.D. Laing. These thinkers have a surprisingly high degree of reflection upon and import into common, everyday lived experience. Brent Potter's work concludes with a critique of psychiatry, cognitive-behavioral and manualised approaches to psychological distress. He then presents modalities and programs, utilizing a metanoia perspective, that are rising to replace them.

Elements of Faith explores the rich, complex terrain of faith through the lenses of psychoanalysis, existential phenomenology, and lived clinical experience. It offers both theoretical reflections and a compelling case study of a therapeutic journey in faith, identity, and transformation. This book investigates the multidimensional nature of faith as an existential and psychoanalytic phenomenon. Engaging with thinkers such as Heidegger, Bion, Kierkegaard, and Hillman, Brent Potter examines faith not as static belief but as a lived, dynamic structure of human experience. Drawing upon clinical work, especially the transformative therapeutic process with a patient named Sara, the book reveals how faith surfaces in moments of crisis, longing, and relational rupture. With careful attention to the Hebraic and Greek worldviews, the author provides insight into faith’s ethical, psychological, cultural, and theological contours. It is both scholarly and intimate—bridging theory and practice, ancient insight and modern struggle.Elements of Faith enriches both theoretical and practical dimensions of psychoanalytic inquiry, and will be of great interest to psychoanalysts looking to explore faith within their practice. It will also appeal to mental health professionals, theologians, students of psychology and religion, and general readers interested in the intersection of faith and clinical practice.

Existential-Psychoanalytic Reflections on Belief and Being offers an exploration of faith not as dogma but as a psychoanalytic and existential phenomenon.Drawing from existential phenomenology, psychoanalysis, and theology, Brent Potter examines how individuals navigate despair, loss, and meaning-making today. This book engages deeply with thinkers such as Freud, Jung, Heidegger, Winnicott, Bion, Eigen, Tolkien, and Michael Heiser, weaving together clinical insights and philosophical reflections to offer an integrative approach to faith and human existence. This book argues that faith is not a belief in propositions but a form of lived trust. It is an ethical and emotional disposition that endures in the face of ambiguity. This book also explores the meaning and experience of faith in a world marked by psychological fragmentation, cultural upheaval, and existential crises.Existential-Psychoanalytic Reflections on Belief and Being will be of great interest to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and pastoral counselors, as well as academics and scholars of theology, philosophy, existential psychology, and spirituality. It will also be relevant to anyone seeking to understand the complex interplay between psychological depth and spiritual meaning in the contemporary world.

Elements of Self-Destruction explores how individuals unconsciously enact self-harming patterns through a phenomenological psychoanalytic lens. This revised edition deepens and expands the theoretical framework, offering a more integrative and culturally responsive examination. Drawing on the author’s extensive clinical practice, the book explores psychic fragmentation, repetition compulsion, moral injury, and dissociation - not only as intrapsychic symptoms but as socially reinforced phenomena. Brent Potter uses clinical theory, philosophical analysis and a new psychobiographical study to hold a mirror to unconscious processes of self-erasure, framed through the lens of existential inquiry, psychoanalysis, and contemporary cultural dynamics.Elements of Self-Destruction will be of great interest to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists in practice and in training, clinicians seeking trauma-informed resources for understanding self-harming and dissociative presentations, and academics and students of depth and existential psychology, philosophy, trauma studies, political psychology, and cultural studies.

Elements of Reparation excavates of psychic violence and the human potential for healing - an undertaking that is at once theoretical, clinical, and existential.Drawing on object relations theory, existential-phenomenological psychoanalysis, and post-Jungian thought, Brent Potter explores how destructiveness and creativity coexist in the psyche. What has been added is not ornamentation but further descent: two new chapters emerge from the fault lines of collective trauma, spiritual crisis, and cultural fragmentation. There is greater attention given to the sacred - how it appears, how it is defended against, and how it might function as a container for psychic integration. Also addressed is the violence of surveillance, disembodiment, and technocratic flattening that characterizes our historical moment. This new edition offers a return to the wounds with a fuller vocabulary, a steadier hand, and the conviction that reparation is never final, never complete, but always possible.Elements of Reparation will be of great interest to psychoanalytic clinicians, depth-oriented therapists, and analytic scholars. It will hold appeal for students and scholars of trauma studies, religious studies, political psychology, cultural analysis, existential psychotherapy, post-Jungian theory, spiritual crisis and mental health, and the psychology of violence and healing. It also intersects with the interests of communities seeking integrative responses to trauma, including clergy, chaplains, and professionals in restorative justice and social work settings.

This book is an ideal resource for general readers who want a clear understanding of people suffering with chaotic emotions, and for clinicians treating patients for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).The patterns of behavior of those with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are often frustrating and mystifying to both clinicians and family members, despite several decades of study and research on this form of distress. Borderline Personality Disorder: New Perspectives on a Stigmatizing and Overused Diagnosis presents a thorough critical and historical review of the diagnosis of BPD and explores—through academic and clinical narratives—the different processes that occur in borderline behavior patterns. The authors offer new perspectives that emphasize the whole person rather than a diagnosis, addressing the emotional storms and mood instability of BPD, providing guidance on managing emotional chaos in the therapeutic relationship, and explaining how to use one's own feelings as a clinical tool. Their approach gives an intimate experiential feel for the interpersonal processes that occur in psychotherapy for both the patient and therapist. The result: readers will better understand who the person behind the diagnosis is, and comprehend what it really feels like to be someone struggling with these difficult interpersonal patterns.

Why are humans, who are motivated by self-preservation, also motivated to engage in behaviors that threaten and even extinguish their existence? The present work has given thought to this question and examined the phenomenon of self-destruction through the perspectives of empirical psychology, psychoanalysis, analytical psychology, as well as existential-phenomenological psychology. The themes included in this book are: the emerging understanding of self-destructiveness in culture, religion, philosophy, and psychology; Bion's investigation into the self-destructive capacity of the mind; Heidegger's ontology of Being and the Enframing of technology; and identifying and delineating the 'who' who most experiences the impact of human-to-human destructiveness in our contemporary culture.
