Liz Burns, a psychoanalyst, receives a visit from Nicki, a troubled young woman who in her dreams is tormented by a bearded devil. She immediately recognizes a case of child abuse and as the clues mount up her own husband becomes a suspect. However, Nicki and her brother are only out for revenge.

When Chief Constable Bligh accompanies her friend Diane Tulliver home to Dysart Hall after a night at the opera they arrive to a horrifying scene.
