From his first publication, Aratos of Sicyon (1933), to his death in 2008, F. W. Walbank established himself as one of the leading ancient historians of the last century. His many publications - not least his three-volume commentary on the Greek historian of Roman power, Polybius - transformed the study both of Polybius and of the history of the Hellenistic world. Polybius and his World honours Walbank''s achievement by bringing together a number of leading scholars in the fields of Hellenistic historiography and history. The twenty chapters, including an introduction by the volume''s editors, re-examine a number of central Polybian themes: Polybius'' position between Greece and Rome, his account of the Roman constitution, and the relationship of his work with Xenophon, Phylarchus, Aratus of Sicyon, and Livy (amongst others). The book looks at Polybius'' text in the light of narratological perspectives and for the wealth of source material it offers for the economic historian, whilst three chapters also consider aspects of Walbank''s own life and work, especially the relationship between his political commitments and his academic work, the genesis of his Polybian commentary, and the personal backdrop to his career.

This new edition deals with Book 5 of Statius'' Silvae, which has often been neglected in thematic treatments of the poet''s work. The book is notable for its concern with Statius himself - one poem is a lament for his father, who was himself a poet and a teacher. As well as discussing issues of linguistic usage and textual problems (which are numerous), the commentary examines such aspects of literary interpretation as the use of allusion and the role of genre, and also includes a conspectus of the historical and cultural background. This is an invaluable introduction to the work of a learned, and increasingly appreciated, poet.

Previously self-published by the author, this book charts the course of a dramatic career as a Wing Commander. Living through one of the most dynamic periods in military and Aviation development history, Bruce Gibson saw events play out from his elevated aerial position. His fascinating story will appeal to a wide audience, focussing as it does not only upon Aviation concerns. From life as a mischievous child living in the East End of London, to realising his true direction and joining the RAF Air Volunteer Reserves in 1937, and then the Royal Air Force, and beyond into Aviation ventures in a Civilian capacity. His amusing observations and anecdotes provide the most colourful insight into life during the monochromatic blackout years of World War II, and beyond. Many historical records and operational logs are available on the market to those looking for cold facts and statistical analyses of events; this account features the human tales, the anecdotes and spirit of camaraderie which characterised Gibson's experiences.
