In 1987, our first book Acupuncture: Textbook and Atlas received rave reviews (e.g., in New England Journal of Medicine). This prompted us to write this smaller, affordable version in order to reach a wider audience. The smaller format has been so successful that we are now into our fourth revised edition. This has given us the opportunity to update and improve the book. For example, nu­ merous new references to scientific advances have been added. Also the section on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) was ad­ ded because it gives a more complete picture of the current prac­ tice of acupuncture. Acupuncture has come a long way since our first book in 1987. There has been a surge of interest in treating drug addictions by ear acupuncture in 450 centers world wide. The treatment of nau­ sea and vomiting has been so well tested (scientifically) that the FDA (USA) is considering making this the major indication for acupuncture in America. Research into its efficacy for neurologi­ cal and pulmonary diseases is also gaining credibility. No longer is chronic pain the only scientifically acceptable use for acupuncture (based on the endorphin mechanism).

Following an introduction to the philosophical and theoreti- cal background of traditional Chinese medicine, the dia- gnostic system is presented: the Chinese system of channels and functional organs, the significance of pointsand point categories, methods of needling and moxibustion. There is a chapter on treatment based on western diagnosis.

Following an introduction to the philosophical andtheoretical background oftraditional Chinese medicine, thediagnostic system of acupuncture is presented. The Chinesesystem of channels and functional organs and thesignificance of the points are described. The 14 mainchannels with the most important acupuncture points fordaily practice are presented with didactic emphasis onmorphology and clinical applicability. The methods ofneeding and moxibustion are described in detail with theirclinical applications. The most important acupuncture pointsare given for the different diagnoses.

We are very pleased that it has become necessary after such a short time to publish a new edition of this handy guide to acupuncture, which is intended to combine practicality with an affordable price. It, just like the first edition, is based on our larger Acupunclure­ Textbook and Atlas, but we have taken this opportunity to revise and update the text. For example, several scientific advances have been included in Chapter 2 (e. g. , findings of recent studies on drug addiction, antiemetic effects, and urogenital efficacy). In response to numerous requests we have added a detailed account of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Chapter 8. Although most practitioners in the West have been using "scien­ tific" acupuncture (e. g. , stimulating peripheral nerves to release endorphins), a growing number are now trying TCM approaches. The mechanism of action of TCM is unknown: the method is based on empirical phenomenology and pattern recognition rather than cause-and-effect logic. Nevertheless, double-blind, controlled scien­ tific trials are required to determine whether TCM is more effective than "scientific" acupuncture. Scientific assessment of TCM in con­ trolled clinical trials is possible even in the absence of a scientific explanation of its mechanism of action, i. e. , even if we do not know how it works. Many successful Western medical procedures are empirical; for instance, gaseous anesthetics are used widely al­ though we do not understand how they work.

Basics of Acupuncture, concise yet easy to read, is a unique introductory book, now in its 3rd edition. For the first time, Western science and medicine are combined with traditional Chinese concepts. This book includes an introduction to the philosophy and theory of traditional Chinese medicine, followed by a detailed account of diagnosis and description of the Chinese system of channels, functional organs, and the most important acupuncture points. In the medical chapter a more direct approach regarding the use of life force on the chakra levels has been adopted, and the description of the various disorders and their treatment expanded. This book was written by physicians for physicians and medical students and is characterized by a high degree of practical relevance: a must for everyone practising acupuncture!

"Der Stux": Akupunktur - Lehrbuch und Atlas - hat sich seit der erfolgreichen Erstpublikation im Jahre 1985 über vier weitere Auflagen als das Standardlehrbuch der Akupunktur durchgesetzt. In der vorliegenden überarbeiteten und erweiterten 5. Auflage wurden die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen der Akupunktur aktualisiert, neueste Entwicklungen in der wissenschaftlichen Anerkennung sowohl in den USA als auch in Deutschland werden beschrieben, das Kapitel zur Akupunkturtherapie wurde deutlich erweitert, neue Krankheitsbilder kamen hinzu. Die Übersichtlichkeit der Gliederung, der Textaufbau nach didaktischen Gesichtspunkten sowie die klare Darstellung der Details anhand ausgezeichneter Abbildungen machen es leicht, dieses für den westlichen Leser faszinierende Neuland zu erschließen.

Die 3. Auflage des Lehrbuches und Atlas der Akupunktur ist eine neubearbeitete und erweiterte Ausgabe des eingeführten Standardwerkes der Akupunktur. Die Kapitel über die historische Entwicklung der Akupunktur sowie die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen wurden aktualisiert. Das diagnostische System der chinesischen Medizin, das die Basis für verschiedene Therapien bildet, wird didaktisch verständlich dargestellt. Ebenso erfuhr der traditionelle Hintergrund eine wesentliche Erweiterung, u.a. durch ein Kapitel zur chinesischen Nosologie. Dieses neue Kapitel über die Syndrome der chinesischen Medizin stellt in didaktisch übersichtlicher Form die Ätiologie, Pathogenese, Symptomatik und Therapie der 31 wichtigsten Störungsmuster dar, auf denen eine traditionelle Diagnose basiert. Durch ergänzende Detailzeichnungen zu den Abbildungen der Meridiane und Akupunkturpunkte wurde eine noch größere didaktische Anschaulichkeit erreicht. Das Kapitel zur Akupunkturtherapie der über 100 Krankheitsbilder wurde ebenfalls neu bearbeitet und deutlich erweitert. Diese Neuauflage enthält die vor kurzem von den verschiedenen Akupunkturgesellschaften beschlossene deutsche Standardnomenklatur der Akupunktur.
