Sculptured Surface Machining (SSM) plays a vital role in the process of bringing new products to the market place. A great variety of products, from automotive body-panels to mobile phones, rely on this technology for the machining of their dies and moulds. This book documents the latest research progress and key issues affecting SSM software development. With a particular focus on the CAD/CAM environment, this book provides a rich source of reference, and covers such topics as fundamental mathematical tools, SSM-process models, process planning models and key tool-path generator (TPG), in addition to discussing more advanced theory and technology such as the new `C-space'- based TPG methods and `cloud-of-points' data machining. Sculptured Surface Machining: Is the first book to discuss all aspects of SSM, from SSM-process models to SSM- software design methodologies Presents a feature-based CAPP (computer-automated process planning) methodology for sculptured surface machining Includes practical applications for NC machining technologies. This book is essential reading for manufacturing engineers producing products with sculptured surfaces, software engineers working with CAD/CAM software, and researchers in the fields of mechanical, production and industrial engineering, and computer science.

This text provides a comprehensive treatment of the subject of sculptured surface machining in terms of user needs, CAM software solutions and theoretical research results and issues. State-of-the-art capabilities of the best commercial CAM systems are compared to user needs, and advanced academic research is presented. Among the topics covered are the following: generative NC for dies and molds; 5-axis machining of impellers; cutting simulation and NC verification; virtual machining; CAPP for die and mold machining; and NURBS-based CNC interpolators. It contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Sculptured Surface Machining: Machining Impossible Shapes (SMM'98), sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held at the Chrysler Technology Center, Michigan, USA, in November 1998. This book is aimed at researchers and practitioners in computer science, technical managers and software specialists.

On November 9-11, 1998,85 participants, representing 17 countries, gathered in Aubum Hills, Michigan, at the Chrysler Tech Center, to attend a workshop "SSM'98" (or Sculptured Surface Machining '98) organized by IFIP Working Group 5.3. This was the first major workshop on sculptured surface machining since the CAM-I sponsored conference "Machining Impossible Surfaces" held in 1981. The purpose of the SSM'98 workshop, entitled "Machining Impossible Shapes", was to promote a cross-fertilization of ideas among three communities: industrial users, CAM software developers and academic researchers. There were 17 participants who were "industrial users", 15 represented CAM software developers, 4 were from the machine tool industry, with the remainder being academic researchers. The format of the meeting included 40 presentations in 9 sessions, 4 keynote speeches and a sufficient amount of time for informal discussion amongst the participants. One of the most valuable aspects of the workshop was the opportunity for participants to meet informally and to discuss their mutual interests. This led to two "participant organized" sessions on five axis machining and on machine tool controllers.
