The islanders are a strange mix, some island-born, some seeking a slower life away from the modern world. All have their own secrets, some much darker than others. What if one person was your whole world?A young couple fall in love at a time when scientists are discovering that humanity has stopped being able to have children. When the two realise they are a exception to this rule, so do the authorities. Almost two hundred years later, in the overgrown ruins of a world now almost emptied of people, the only person Mouse has ever known is Cat, the brave girl who carried him inland, away from the coughing sickness that came from the sea and killed their families. Courageous and clever, the duo know how to survive. And then strangers arrive with a threat to be met, and a choice to be made. Nothing will ever be the same. And innocence may die first, but hope? Hope dies last. The Two of Us at the End of the World by C. A. Fletcher is a deeply engaging story about resilience that bridges the gap between the end of the world and its aftermath as four unforgettable characters try not only to survive, but to preserve the very thing that makes life worth saving in the first place.

Flooding and Environmental Challenges for Venice and its Lagoon

This book was first published in 2005. Time may be running out for Venice. With rising average water levels, the frequency of city flooding is increasing and the threat of a repeat of the November 1966 events, when a violent storm surge took water levels nearly two metres higher than usual, remains. Surrounding the city is a severely degraded lagoon ecosystem. This timely scientific and technical volume synthesises the great wealth and diversity of recent interdisciplinary research on Venice and its Lagoon and the prospects for large engineering interventions to separate the lagoon and sea, as well as other measures in the built environment, discussed at an International Conference, held at Churchill College, Cambridge, in September 2003. The lessons and inferences reported here show how Venice, with its mix of challenges to protect its prestigious cultural heritage within one of the largest coastal wetlands in the Mediterranean, and against a background of pressures brought about by industry, port activities and tourism, share many issues with other areas threatened by coastal flooding, including areas of the Netherlands, the USA and the cities of London and St Petersburg.
