This collection explores the ways in which traumatic experience becomes a part of public memory. It explores the premise that traumatic events are realities; they happen in the world, not in the fantasy life of individuals or in the narrative frames of our televisions and cinemas.

Based on numerous qualitative interviews, this cutting edge book investigates how Hong Kong's economic structure and neoliberal policies have contributed to class inequality in China's global city. Inspired by Bourdieu's approach to class, the author examines class stratification in education, works, and political attitudes and argues that the lack of explicit class identifications among the people does not imply irrelevance of class. Relying upon empirical field data to question the applicability of the reflexive modernization theory, the text debates whether individualization makes class a redundant concept in advanced capitalist societies.

Models in Planning: An Introduction to the Use of Quantitative Models in Planning focuses on some of the techniques utilized for the construction of urban and regional models, with emphasis on the understanding of model structure rather than on rigorous mathematical analysis.Organized into eight chapters, this book begins by explaining the role of models in the planning process. Subsequent chapters elucidate the principles for the design and use of models, and the mathematical preliminaries involved. The different models, namely, linear, gravity, and Lowry models, are also described including their optimization. This material will be very useful for students and practicing planners with a limited numerate background. It will allow readers to follow up the extensive literature dealing with the more complex operational versions of the discussed models.

Models in Planning: An Introduction to the Use of Quantitative Models in Planning discusses the fundamental concepts in the techniques employed in the construction urban and regional models. The book emphasizes understanding of the models rather than the mathematical aspects of model construction. The text first details the role of models in the planning process, and then proceeds to discussing the principles of the design and use of models. In the third chapter, the book presents the elementary mathematical concepts and symbols that are essential in understanding the subsequent discussion of models. The succeeding series of chapters covers the types of model, which are linear, gravity, and lowry. The text also details the principles involved in optimizing models. The book will be of great use to students and practitioners of civil engineers, architecture, and urban planning.

NDMA is an aliphatic nitrosamine that has been identified as a disinfection by-product during chloramination of drinking water. In the United States, it has been detected in water treatment plants using chloramine as a disinfectant. NDMA has significant health concerns, as its 10-6 cancer-risk level was determined at a level of 0.7 ng/L. Although other nitrosamines exhibit a similar toxicological profile, their relevance for drinking water disinfection with chloramine is unclear.? The objectives of the project were to identify strategies that could be used by water utilities to minimize the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines during disinfection of drinking water. Additionally, the relevance of other nitrosamines besides N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) for drinking water disinfection with chloramine was assessed. An extensive literature search was performed to collect information on mechanisms of nitrosamine formation, to identify or at least characterize possible precursors for nitrosamine formation, and to identify tools for removal of precursor compounds prior to disinfection. Finally, possibilities for nitrosamine removal were evaluated.? Additional laboratory-scale experiments were performed in order to fill knowledge gaps identified during the literature survey. For this, tests for the determination of the nitrosamine formation potential (NFP) were performed. With these NFP tests, water samples could be characterized with regard to their potential to form nitrosamines. The conclusions from the literature survey and the laboratory-scale experiments were verified by full-scale tests in water utilities in the United States, Australia, and Germany. ? ?
