«L'association de la gravure avec la littérature, pour toutes sortes d'ouvrages indistinctement, semblait dégénérer en une sorte de manie qui pouvait devenir dangereuse à l'une et à l'autre.»Ainsi s'exprime en 1752, Robert Hecquet, graveur et dessinateur d'illustrations, ami de Nicolas Cochin. C'est à tenter de comprendre à la fois le sens de cette «manie» et la nature de ce «danger» que se consacre ce livre. Par l'analyse d'une soixantaine de gravures puisées dans environ quarante fictions narratives en prose illustrées au cours du XVIIIe siècle, il s'agit en somme de faire apparaître certaines figures récurrentes et quelques zones d'ombre d'un imaginaire collectif.
