In 1892, John Elliott Tappan, a 24-year-old Minneapolis lawyer, was worried how people saved their money. Out of these concerns, Investors Syndicate was born, one of the first of a new type of financial institution designed to meet the savings needs of the average person. Here is the story of this financial pioneer, whose innovation has today grown into one of the US's largest financial services companies, American Express Financial Advisors. The book draws on Tappan's diaries, business correspondence, and various family oral histories. Tappan's life, work and ideas chronicle the changes in spending and savings, work and leisure, the culture of politics and money, that have given rise to modern notions of consumer finance.

This is a collection of lecture notes from the Summer School 'Cycles Algébriques; Aspects Transcendents, Grenoble 2001'. The topics range from introductory lectures on algebraic cycles to more advanced material. The advanced lectures are grouped under three headings: Lawson (co)homology, motives and motivic cohomology and Hodge theoretic invariants of cycles. Among the topics treated are: cycle spaces, Chow topology, morphic cohomology, Grothendieck motives, Chow-Künneth decompositions of the diagonal, motivic cohomology via higher Chow groups, the Hodge conjecture for certain fourfolds, an effective version of Nori's connectivity theorem, Beilinson's Hodge and Tate conjecture for open complete intersections. As the lectures were intended for non-specialists many examples have been included to illustrate the theory. As such this book will be ideal for graduate students or researchers seeking a modern introduction to the state-of-the-art theory in this subject.

This book is the outcome of the 1996 Warwick Algebraic Geometry EuroConference, containing 17 survey and research articles selected from the most outstanding contemporary research topics in algebraic geometry. Several of the articles are expository: among these a beautiful short exposition by Paranjape of the new and very simple approach to the resolution of singularities; a detailed essay by Ito and Nakamura on the ubiquitous A,D,E classification, centred around simple surface singularities; a discussion by Morrison of the new special Lagrangian approach to giving geometric foundations to mirror symmetry; and two deep, informative surveys by Siebert and Behrend on Gromow-Witten invariants treating them from the point of view of algebraic and symplectic geometry. The remaining articles cover a wide cross-section of the most significant research topics in algebraic geometry. This includes Gromow-Witten invariants, Hodge theory, Calabi-Yau 3-folds, mirror symmetry and classification of varieties.
