The first volume of the International Environmental Law Reports focuses on early decisions. It includes all the well known, and some lesser known, international decisions relevant to international environmental law prior to the 1970s, with a summary of each decision. Volume 1 also includes a number of very early national decisions considered important in the development of international environmental law, either because they were the background against which international decisions were shaped or because they are often referred to but are not widely available in English. Other decisions are included in because they illustrate of national views of the content and direction of international law at the beginning of the twentieth century. This is the first ever collection devoted to international environmental law decisions, an essential work of reference collecting all relevant materials in one place.

Volume 3 of the IELR focuses on human rights and environment. Against a background of emerging rights to environment in national and international instruments, traditional human rights are being used to achieve environmental objectives. Globally, rights such as the right to private life, the right to life, the rights of minorities, the right to peaceful enjoyment of possessions and the right to a fair hearing are increasingly being invoked and interpreted in an environmental context. This volume brings together relevant decisions of the UN Human Rights Committee, the European Court, and former Commission, of Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. It provides a summary or note of each case, the full legal text in the most important cases, and includes an invaluable digest of cases arranged by the human right relied upon. This is an essential reference work for those interested in human rights and environment.

The fourth volume of the International Environmental Law Reports collects together approximately fifty decisions of national courts from twenty-six countries, all broadly related to international environmental law. The cases cover a range of environmental issues, from protected species and habitats to activities that impact on the environment - including mining, the construction of dams and waste disposal. The collection evidences different approaches to the relationship between domestic and international legal systems, and highlights many substantive and procedural environmental laws that are enjoying increasing recognition around the world.
