Im Zuge des gesellschaftlichen Transformations- und Individualisierungsprozesses eröffnet sich ein Gestaltungsfreiraum für die Individuen: Die ‘Normalbiographie’ mit ihren inhärenten Erwartungen und Normen der ‘richtigen Ereignisse zum richtigen Zeitpunkt’ ist nicht mehr per se handlungsleitend - Lebensereignisse und deren Anordnung werden variabel und optional. Der ‘richtige’ Zeitpunkt, die Ausbildung abzuschließen, einen Partner zu finden, zu heiraten und Kinder zu bekommen, obliegt den Vorstellungen und der Gestaltung der Individuen bzw. stehen ganz zur Disposition. Für Individuen in Paarbeziehungen ist die Abstimmung individueller Vorstellungen und Erwartungen, um ein gemeinsames Zusammenleben zu ermöglichen, notwendiger denn je.
