An insightful retrospective of the genre-defying contemporary artist and MacArthur Fellow Joyce J. Scott, showcasing contributions from an extraordinary group of artists and scholars This essential new volume serves as a critical resource and details the richness and complexity of the work of Joyce J. Scott (b. 1948), beginning with an overview of the artist’s 50-year career—an interconnected, community-generating practice that embraces performance art, beaded necklaces and sculptures, wall hangings, and prints. Interviews with the artist by Leslie King Hammond and Valerie Cassel Oliver focus on Scott’s matrilineage and womanist ethos and on the genre-defying choreography of her career across disciplines. Six thematic essays by established and emerging scholars discuss the ancient and global reach of beads, including Yorùbá traditions; consider the utility of satire and performance in connection with the work of emerging Black artists; and explore the significance of geography, history, and place. Excerpts from foundational out-of-print texts and an illustrated chronology annotated by Scott appear alongside contributions by artists Sonya Clark, Oletha DeVane, Jeffrey Gibson, Kay Lawal-Muhammad, Malcolm Peacock, and William C. Rhodes III. Scott makes difficult subjects intimately felt, confronting histories of trauma through wearable art and exquisite sculpture. With humor and pathos, she twists menacing stereotypes into grotesque and tender retorts that spur conversation, making art a vehicle for learning, reflection, and healing.Distributed for the Seattle Art Museum and Baltimore Museum of ArtExhibition Schedule: Baltimore Museum of Art(March 24–July 14, 2024) Seattle Art Museum(October 17, 2024–January 20, 2025)

Showcases the extraordinary work of notable American and European postwar artistsSeattle art collectors Richard E. Lang and Jane Lang Davis were frequent visitors to New York City in the 1970s and early 1980s when they collaboratively built their collection, filling their home with singular works of art. Their shared legacy and passion for engaging thoughtfully, deeply, and personally with art—and the frisson of excitement that arises with such a connection—are celebrated and echoed in this special exhibition catalogue. Spanning 1945 through 1976, the paintings, drawings, and sculptures in Frisson serve as significant examples of mature works and pivotal moments of artistic development from some of the most influential American and European artists of the postwar period, including Francis Bacon, Lee Krasner, Clyfford Still, Philip Guston, Joan Mitchell, David Smith, and others. Together they represent an inimitable archive of innovation and a cross-pollination of leading artistic positions in the postwar years. With twenty new scholarly essays written by leading experts, Frisson provides the first opportunity for in-depth research into and new insights about nineteen noteworthy artworks recently acquired by the Seattle Art Museum.

Artists and architects have long used sketches, notes, and sculptural models to explore or test new ideas and designs. But in the twentieth century, as Western art moved away from straightforward depictions of the natural world, models and prototypes began to evolve from preparatory steps in the creative process to, increasingly, autonomous artworks. "Models and Prototypes", the companion publication to the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum exhibition of the same name, draws on the works of modernist pioneers and major contemporary figures alike to explore how artists in a variety of media have redefined artistic practice by expanding the use of the model as a new visual force. Lavishly illustrated with dozens of pieces by such luminaries as Kandinsky, Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Thomas Demand, and Jenny Holzer, "Models and Prototypes" also features a fascinating essay by curator Catharina Manchanda. Ultimately, this first volume in the museum's collection-based "Focus" series illuminates the centrality of models in contemporary art, asking why they remain so compelling as both tools and subjects.
