The term ‘networking’ can mean very different things in different contexts: formal organisational structures, personal or career development, or a technique for increasing sales. This is an approachable book which brings together the basics of all these meanings, underpinned by an overview of multiple theoretical models that support the various approaches to networking.Drawing on mainstream models in the fields of marketing, employability, innovation and organisational studies, Business Networking provides an integrated overview of the process and structure of networking across a range of contexts. Synthesising theory with practice, features include examples and viewpoints from a range of networking practitioners in each chapter, presented in their own words, as well as chapter summaries and reflective questions. Networking is considered a key skill for students, entrepreneurs and practitioners and, given the explosion of opportunities brought by the digital age for individuals and organisations to operate within a broad and global network, an introduction to maximising the benefits is timely. This book should be recommended reading for a broad range of postgraduate courses, from relationship marketing and entrepreneurship skills to employability and degree apprenticeship programmes. It should also be useful for reflective practitioners looking to expand and utilise their networks effectively.

Particulate discrete element analysis is becoming increasingly popular for research in geomechanics as well as geology, chemical engineering, powder technology, petroleum engineering and in studying the physics of granular materials. With increased computing power, practising engineers are also becoming more interested in using this technology for analysis in industrial applications. This is the first single work on Discrete Element Modelling (DEM) providing the information to get started with this powerful numerical modelling approach. Written by an independent author with experience both in developing DEM codes and using commercial codes, this book provides the basic details of the numerical method and the approaches used to interpret the results of DEM simulations. Providing a basic overview of the numerical method, Particulate Discrete Element Modelling discusses issues related to time integration and numerical stability, particle types, contact modelling and boundary conditions. It summarizes approaches to interpret DEM data so that users can maximize their insight into the material response using DEM. The aim of this book is to provide both users and prospective users of DEM with a concise reference book that includes tips to optimize their usage. Particulate Discrete Element Modelling is suitable both for first time DEM analysts as well as more experienced users. It will be of use to professionals, researchers and higher level students, as it presents a theoretical overview of DEM as well as practical guidance on running DEM simulations and interpreting DEM simulation data.

Authoritative and generously illustrated resource covering the many properties of soil and its behavior needed for addressing geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering projects and problems. The Fourth Edition of Fundamentals of Soil Behavior has been thoroughly updated to provide the latest information on the physical properties of soil and the fundamentals of its behavior, with hundreds of tables and graphs illustrating correlations among composition, classification, state, and static and dynamic properties. Overall, each topic is addressed in a micro-to-macro sequence, considering behaviors at the atomic and/or particle scales to develop understanding of soil properties and behaviors at the macro-scale, which is relevant to engineering practice. This Fourth Edition includes two new chapters on special features of soil behavior and temperature-dependent soil behavior. Other chapters have been substantially updated to include the latest developments in imaging technology, and analysis numerical simulations that have advanced research on the complexities of soil behavior, and recent experimental data. The content has been reviewed, consolidated, and reorganized to more effectively comunicate key information. The text features end-of-chapter questions and problems to aid in seamless reader comprehension and information retention. Updated by true thought leaders in the field, the Fourth Edition of Fundamentals of Soil Behavior includes detailed information on: Soil formation, covering the earth’s crust, the geologic cycle, rock and mineral stability, weathering, and origin of clay minerals and genesis.Soil mineralogy, covering atomic structure, interatomic bonding, secondary bonds, crystal notation, and clay mineral characteristics.Fundamental engineering characterization of soil, covering granular soils and clay minerals.Observing and quantifying soil fabric, covering qualitative and quantitative assessment of soil fabric.Transport of heat, fluid, and electrical current. The fundamentals of volume change, deformation, and strength properties of soils. The impact of time and temperature changes on soil behavior.Providing an understanding of soil behavior, a fundamental requisite to a wide variety of engineering applications including foundation design and construction, earthwork construction, and geotechnical engineering, Fundamentals of Soil Behavior is an essential learning resource for geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineers, geologists, geophysicists, and students studying geotechnical engineering and granular materials.

The Critical State Framework for Soil Behaviour: New insight from DEM Simulations presents the latest on a topic that was originally proposed by Schofield and Wroth in the 1960s, and has subsequently proven to be a very good framework to describe sand behavior. This framework uses the critical state, the void ratio and stress level attained by a soil at large shear deformations, as a reference state. The particulate discrete element method (DEM) allows the fundamental basis of the critical state to be examined in detail. Using DEM simulations, this book considers the sensitivity of the critical state to particle scale parameters (friction) and overall conditions (3D stress state), also linking between overall behavior and particle scale mechanics. The simulation data is then analyzed to better understand the fundamental mechanisms.
