Trauma patients present a unique challenge to anesthesiologists, since they require resource-intensive care, often complicated by pre-existing medical conditions. This fully revised new edition focuses on a broad spectrum of traumatic injuries and the procedures anesthesiologists perform to care for trauma patients perioperatively, surgically, and post-operatively. Special emphasis is given to assessment and treatment of co-existing disease, including surgical management of trauma patients with head, spine, orthopedic, cardiac, and burn injuries. Topics such as training for trauma (including use of simulation) and hypothermia in trauma are also covered. Six brand new chapters address pre-hospital and ED trauma management, imaging in trauma, surgical issues in head trauma and in abdominal trauma, anesthesia for oral and maxillofacial trauma, and prevention of injuries. The text is enhanced with numerous tables and 300 illustrations showcasing techniques of airway management, shock resuscitation, echocardiography and use of ultrasound for the performance of regional anesthesia in trauma.

Covering the most important topics in trauma anesthesia, this updated edition provides anesthesiology trainees and practitioners with a practical basis for managing trauma patients. Many recent advances in trauma care are identified, including paradigm shifts in the management of bleeding and coagulopathy, new neuromuscular blockade and anticoagulant reversal drugs, and updated clinical practice guidelines. This volume provides a concise, practical review of the essential elements in the care of the severely injured trauma patient, including emergency airway management, fluid and blood resuscitation, monitoring, coagulation therapy, regional and general anesthesia, and perioperative care. Edited by two of the most experienced trauma anesthesiologists in the United States, with chapters written by experts from leading US and Canadian trauma centers with the highest and most varied caseload of critically injured patients, Essentials of Trauma Anesthesia identifies new trends in surgery and anesthesiology practices that impact on the management of trauma patients.

In Report Card Nation, Charles E. Smith offers an insider’s perspective on a pivotal moment in American education reform. In 2003, under the mandate of President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind initiative, Smith and a team of public servants brought the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)—also known as the Nation’s Report Card—to the forefront of federal education policy. Once a respected but relatively obscure measure, the NAEP quickly became the primary tool for assessing the successes and failures of public education across the country. Smith's account details the complexities of implementing a national assessment program with far-reaching consequences under intense political scrutiny. As the Nation’s Report Card became a centerpiece of federal accountability measures, its impact reverberated throughout the educational landscape. While the reforms led to budgetary windfalls and documented successes in some areas, they also exposed deep divides, particularly in urban school districts where standardized testing policies contributed to school closures and increased private school enrollments. Drawing on his thirty-two years in Tennessee state government and six years as executive director of the National Assessment Governing Board, Smith explores both the promises and the pitfalls of the No Child Left Behind era. He provides readers with an honest, behind-the-scenes account of the shifts in American education policy during this transformative decade, including the groundwork for implementation of Common Core standards. Smith’s clear-eyed, well-researched narrative provides an essential look at how national policy shaped local realities, and how one of the most controversial periods in public education still reverberates today.

These notes are based on a one-quarter course given at the Department of Biophysics and Theoretical Biology of the University of Chicago in 1916. The course was directed to graduate students in the Division of Biological Sciences with interests in population biology and neurobiology. Only a slight acquaintance with probability and differential equations is required of the reader. Exercises are interwoven with the text to encourage the reader to play a more active role and thus facilitate his digestion of the material. One aim of these notes is to provide a heuristic approach, using as little mathematics as possible, to certain aspects of the theory of stochastic processes that are being increasingly employed in some of the population biol ogy and neurobiology literature. While the subject may be classical, the nov elty here lies in the approach and point of view, particularly in the applica tions such as the approach to the neuronal firing problem and its related dif fusion approximations. It is a pleasure to thank Professors Richard C. Lewontin and Arnold J.F. Siegert for their interest and support, and Mrs. Angell Pasley for her excellent and careful typing. I . PRELIMINARIES 1. Terminology and Examples Consider an experiment specified by: a) the experiment's outcomes, ~, forming the space S; b) certain subsets of S (called events) and by the probabilities of these events.
