Reframing Yeats, the first critical study of its kind, uses a focus on genre and allusion to engage with a broad range of W. B. Yeats’s writings, examining instances of his poetry, autobiographical writings, criticism, and drama. Identifying a schism in recent Yeatsian criticism between biographical and formalist methodologies, Armstrong’s study combines an historicist perspective with close attention to literary form. The result is a flexible approach that casts new light on how Yeats’s texts interact with their interpretative frameworks. Cognizant of both literary and political history, this book presents new interpretations of Yeats’s work. Not only does it provide fresh readings of texts such as “The Municipal Gallery Re-visited,” “Among School Children” and "The Resurrection", but it also raises important new questions concerning Yeats’s relationship to Modernism and literary genre.

W. B. Yeats was not only a poet but also a cultural revolutionary. A restless collaborator, he fostered countless artistic enterprises, from the Abbey Theatre to the Cuala Press, and pursued various inter-artistic media and forums for his work. From childhood co-creations with his siblings to the arresting combination of sound and movement in his final play, The Death of Cuchulain, his work also repeatedly addresses and incorporates music, dance, and the visual, material and theatrical arts with remarkable intensity. For him, literature was a vital thing that engaged, in one form or another, all the senses. This volume's newly commissioned chapters analyse afresh such engagements. Bringing together scholars of literature, aesthetics, cultural history and specialists in drama, music, dance and the visual arts, they provide a broad range of historical, conceptual, and disciplinary approaches and perspectives.

Suffering in Anglophone Literatures engages with postclassical Trauma Studies and opens the traumatic envelope to embrace concepts such as toleration, mourning, nostalgia, vulnerability and existential Angst. The first section explores insomnia in Shakespeare, testimonial suffering in Richardson, nostalgia in Clare, work as a form of suffering in Tennyson and pleasurable suffering in Trollope. The second section deals with suffering as expressed in blues (by August Wilson), intergenerational healing (by Rosanna Deerchild), systemic pain in war fiction (from World War One to the Vietnam War), personal and historical nostalgia (by John Banville) and literary non-commitment to suffering (by Joyce, and Philip Kerr). The final section turns to more recent literary texts ranging from the poetry of Derek Mahon, Philip Metres and Solmaz Sharif to novels on intergenerational trauma (by Kate Morton), the sexual abuse of women (by Miriam Toews) and growing up in poverty (by Douglas Stuart).
