Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton (1573-1624) is widely regarded as the subject of Shakespeare's sonnets, and the two narrative poems Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece are both dedicated to him. Originally published in 1922, this book used the limited available material concerning Southampton to provide a biographical account of his life and connections with Shakespeare. The text was written by Charlotte Carmichael Stopes (1840-1929), a renowned Shakespearean scholar, literary critic and campaigner for women's rights. Illustrative figures and addenda are also contained. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the life of Southampton, Shakespeare and literary criticism.

Charlotte Carmichael Stopes (1840-1829) is best known as the mother of birth control advocate Marie Stopes. Like her daughter, Stopes forged the way for women seeking academic careers: she was the first woman in Scotland to graduate from university, and was later elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. In this monograph Stopes resolves to settle once and for all whether or not Francis Bacon wrote the plays attributed to William Shakespeare, concluding that the Baconian theory is wholly without foundation. Over nearly 300 pages of erudite argument, Stopes examines the numerous distinctions between the lives and experiences of the two writers, their differing styles of writing, and the evidence provided by Shakespeare's contemporaries. Stopes' book also includes extensive appendices providing background information on Shakespeare and the early modern theatre. Charlotte Carmichael Stopes (1841-1929) was a British scholar, a prolific writer and supporter of feminist causes. After becoming the first women to gain a Certificate of Arts in Scotland, Stopes published widely on Shakespeare and social reform, receiving an award from the British Academy in 1916 for her contributions to Shakespearian literary research. This volume, now reissued from the 1907 third edition, was first published in 1894. It contains Stopes' investigation into the history of British women's legal and civic rights. Through an analysis of state papers, parliamentary records and scholarly works on legal history, Stopes provides numerous historical examples of women holding extensive constitutional and legal rights, which are arranged according to the holder's social status. This pioneering feminist history became a key text used by women's suffrage activists to justify their position.
