Retrospective accounts of the careers of twelve prominent management scholars The field of academic management is more competitive than ever before. Moreover, scholars have to deal with rapid advances in technology and an increasingly globalized discipline. But, for those who are prepared, there are also great opportunities to generate new and noteworthy scholarship. In this book, Xiao-Ping Chen and Kevin H. Steensma bring together the wisdom of some of the most prominent voices in the field to show how to develop influential research and succeed in the world of management studies. In A Journey toward Influential Scholarship, twelve prominent management scholars provide retrospective accounts of their professional journeys. These specialists share how they originated, developed, and published their research, as well as the mistakes they made along the way. Their stories offer insights to new scholars, including how to properly observe organizational phenomena, how to ask important research questions, and how to transform these questions into potentially fruitful areas of research. The book also provides useful strategies for developing collaborative relationships, managing the peer review and publication process, and disseminating findings. In combination, the essays provide scholars with an array of pathways for turning research into influential scholarship. More broadly, this is an essential guide for how to pursue a successful career in the field of management.

Due to its nondestructive imaging power, scanning tunneling microscopy has found major applications in the fields of physics, chemistry, engineering, and materials science. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy, with full coverage of the imaging mechanism, instrumentation, and sample applications. The work is the first single-author reference on STM and presents much valuable information previously availableonly as proceedings or collections of review articles. It contains a 32-page section of remarkable STM images, and is organized as a self-contained work, with all mathematical derivations fullydetailed. As a source of background material and current data, the book will be an invaluable resource for all scientists, engineers, and technicians using the imaging abilities of STM and AFM. It may also be used as a textbook in senior-year and graduate level STM courses, and as a supplementary text in surface science, solid-state physics, materials science, microscopy, and quantum mechanics.

It is still hard to believe that manipulation of a single protein on the cell surface or an interaction of two or more proteins, which at times is collectively referred to as a “pathway,” could have such a profound effect on our immune system. At present, a number of such proteins or pathways have been identi?ed. These observations could only be interpreted in a way that, although tens of thousand of proteins are required for a perfectly healthy immune system, many of these pathways may work in either interconnected or linear fashion. Therefore, the combined understanding of each pathway, their interactions with other pathways, and the functional c- sequence, is a cornerstone for our interpretation of pathological basis of diseases and future treatments. It is important to stay abreast on the pace of progress, which I refer to as periodic summary of incremental and breakthrough discoveries in each pathway by the experts and the leader in the ?eld. The CD137 Pathway: Immunology and Diseases represents such an effort and this is the ?rst attempt to summarize our understanding of the CD137 pathway. The following chapters cover the majority of active areas of research in this pathway and also provide an essential resource to both the nonexperts and experts in the ?eld.

The latest research results and important topics driving the development of microstrip and printed antennasKeeping abreast of current research topics and results in a field as dynamic as microstrip and printed antennas is a challenge for graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers alike-theoretical and experimental advances since 1989 have quickly outdated existing literature on the subject. This invaluable reference provides the latest information on conventional antenna topics, comprehensive accounts of new research topics, updated research results, and summaries of future trends.Advances in Microstrip and Printed Antennas is a comprehensive, up-to-date presentation of the research that is propelling these antennas into an ever-widening array of applications, including potential uses in radar and communication systems. Featuring contributions by leading researchers and supplemented with extensive illustrations, this book: Covers recent advances in probe-fed and aperture-coupled microstrip antennas, microstrip arrays, and dual and circularly polarized planar antennasExamines the development of CAD formulas for the rectangular patchExplores the potential for multifunction printed antennas, new high-temperature superconducting materials, active microstrip antennas, and tapered slot printed antennasDiscusses the finite-difference time-domain method of analysisExamines competing dielectric resonator antenna technologyIncludes design data and an extensive bibliography

Fuzzy Logic and Soft Computing contains contributions from world-leading experts from both the academic and industrial communities. The first part of the volume consists of invited papers by international authors describing possibilistic logic in decision analysis, fuzzy dynamic programming in optimization, linguistic modifiers for word computation, and theoretical treatments and applications of fuzzy reasoning. The second part is composed of eleven contributions from Chinese authors focusing on some of the key issues in the fields: stable adaptive fuzzy control systems, partial evaluations and fuzzy reasoning, fuzzy wavelet neural networks, analysis and applications of genetic algorithms, partial repeatability, rough set reduction for data enriching, limits of agents in process calculus, medium logic and its evolution, and factor spaces canes. These contributions are not only theoretically sound and well-formulated, but are also coupled with applicability implications and/or implementation treatments. The domains of applications realized or implied are: decision analysis, word computation, databases and knowledge discovery, power systems, control systems, and multi-destinational routing. Furthermore, the articles contain materials that are an outgrowth of recently conducted research, addressing fundamental and important issues of fuzzy logic and soft computing.

This book is written for beginners who are interested in the game and would like to learn more about its various aspects. It covers the technical aspects of chess: the use of algebraic notation (Chapter 3), chess evaluation (Chapter 4), the opening phase (Chapter 5), the middle game (Chapter 6), the endgame (Chapter 7), and the chess rating system (Chapter 8). It introduces a number of chess problems, formulated with a chess board and chess pieces and presupposing a working knowledge of chess (Chapter 9). It offers an account of variants of chess such as Fischer random chess (Chapter 10). It also covers the cultural aspects of chess: its history (Chapter 2) and status as an immortal game that might enable it to play a role in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (Chapter 11). Wherever possible, chess diagrams are provided to help chess beginners make sense of certain points about chess. Algebraic notation will also guide them in understanding certain chess-based lines of reasoning. Whenever you are ready, let us begin this odyssey of chess!
