CHRIS BARNARD, een van die mees bekroonde skrywers in Afrikaans (o.m. die Hertzogprys twee keer, die CNAprys drie keer) is in 1939 in Nelspruit gebore. Hy was boekuitgewer, joernalis en filmvervaardiger, en as skrywer was hy een van die befaamde Sestigers wat die letterkunde se grense dramaties versit het. Sy tweede roman, Mahala, word dekades reeds onder die klassieke Afrikaanse werke gereken. Sy oeuvre sluit talle literatuursoorte in: kortverhale en romans, jeugverhale, dramas, draaiboeke (o.m. die Oscargenomineerde Paljas), rubrieke en deesdae lirieke. Sy werk is wyd vertaal. Hy is tans ’n neuteboer in Mpumalanga.
