Most academic literature focuses on the position of the child in relation to the parent or the state. In reality, the law is more concerned with the role and function of parents, and this new book addresses the key issues of parental rights and responsibilities.

John Roy Lynch spent most of his childhood as a slave in Mississippi, but all of that changed with the Emancipation Proclamation. Suddenly people like John Roy could have paying jobs and attend school. While many people in the South were unhappy with the social change, John Roy thrived in the new era. He was appointed to serve as justice of the peace and was eventually elected into the United States Congress. This biography, with its informative backmatter and splendid illustrations, gives readers an in-depth look at the Reconstruction period through the life of one of the fi rst African-American congressmen.

True crime, desperation, fraud, and adventure: From the impoverished young woman who enchanted nineteenth-century British society as a faux Asian princess, to the sixteen-year-old boy who "stole" a subway train in 1993, to the lonely but clever Frank Abagnale of Catch Me if You Can fame, these ten vignettes offer riveting insight into mind-blowing masquerades. Graphic panels draw you into the exploits of these pretenders, and meticulously researched details keep you on the edge of your seat. Each scene is presented in the second person, a unique point of view that literally places you inside the faker''s mind. With motivations that include survival, delusion, and plain, old-fashioned greed, the psychology of deception has never been so fascinating or so close at hand.

A profoundly moving nonfiction picture book about tragedy, hope, and healing from award-winning author Chris Barton.Sometimes bad things happen, and you have to tell everyone. Sometimes terrible things happen, and everybody knows. On April 19, 1995, something terrible happened in Oklahoma City: a bomb exploded, and people were hurt and killed. But that was not the end of the story. Those who survived—and those who were forever changed—shared their stories and began to heal. Near the site of the bomb blast, an American elm tree began to heal as well. People took care of the tree just as they took care of each other. The tree and its seedlings now offer solace to people around the world grappling with tragedy and loss.Released to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, this book commemorates what was lost and offers hope for the future."[A] sensitively written and thoughtfully illustrated resource."—starred, School Library Journal"An affecting story of loss . . ."—starred, Kirkus Reviews

As prolific as he is profound, Stephen Cretney has long been regarded as the leading English scholar in the field of family law. From textbooks that provided guidance to generations of students to the crowning achievement of Family Law in the Twentieth Century: A History, Cretney's writing has always been a model of elegance and erudition. Even had the essays in this book not been written in his honor, they would inevitably have had to rely heavily on his work. Private ordering, marriage, civil partnership, cohabitation, children, separation, divorce - the entire spectrum of family law covered here - have all benefited from his insightful comments and meticulous scholarship. What also became apparent - from the rush of judges and academics who wanted to contribute to this book - is the equally high personal regard in which Stephen Cretney is held by his peers. This festschrift is indeed a labor of love.
