Ramses är fjorton år när hans far, Farao Sethos, låter honom mäta sin krafter med den vilda, svarta tjuren. Det är första tecknet på att han är utvald av fadern framför sin bror Chenar, utvald att bli nästa Farao. Ramses som hittills levt en privilegierad ung mans liv förändras under resans gång.
