DDM has the power to change business radically and have significant positive or negative effects for an industry or single company At first this report will illustrate the impact of DDM on supply chains by using supply chain concepts. After that approaches to gain competitive advantage for a global logistics company will be advised before ending with a conclusion.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: A, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, course: Maritime Logistics and Supply Chain Management, language: English, abstract: Several trends, such as globalisation, the growth of shipping alliances, the growingsize of vessels and the development of intermodal transportation, have causedcompetition amongst ports and terminals to become intense (Song, 2002, 2003, 2004;Wortelboer-Van Donselaara and Kolkmana, 2010; Lee and Song, 2007). Nowadays, aport cannot maintain a monopoly status as it did in the past. To adapt to increasingcompetition, ports and terminals are forced to implement new strategies (Song, 2004). One approach to remain competitive in the changing business environment is theimplementation of collaborative initiatives between ports. By collaborating with otherports and terminals, benefits can be obtained that cannot be achieved alone. Due tothis relatively new development, literature regarding collaborative practices within theport industry is quite rare. Detailed investigations regarding the drivers, benefits,barriers and facilitators are, with a few exceptions, completely absent. In addition,Song (2004) mentioned in his paper of port co-opetition, that a questionnaire surveyor interview-based research can overcome his content-analysis-based research andhelp to build a solid theory. Due to the identified research gap, this dissertation aimsto make a contribution to the field of horizontal collaboration between ports andterminals.

It includes the identification of concepts, drivers, benefits and barriers. Moreover, it examines how collaboration initiatives can be managed effectively. The study shows that ports and terminals collaborate in the field of marketing andbusiness development, operations, administrative, regulatory and spin-off. Organizations are forced to collaborate by following drivers: Bargaining power ofshipping lines, increased efficiency in sea-transport and hinterland-connections, aswell as increased requirements of shippers and shipping lines. The benefits of collaborating can be classified in the sections efficiency / costreduction, knowledge and competency, positioning of the company, as well asmarketing and service benefits. Social benefits and green benefits have also beendiscovered. The main barriers are anti-competition regulations and discrepancies betweenpartners, strategic fit and different interests. The top three factors of effective collaboration management are regular face to facemeetings, integration of information and trust. All in all this literature review makes several contributions to the rarely availableliterature of horizontal collaboration in the maritime port and terminal industry.

Bürgerämter galten lange Zeit als das Erfolgsmodell der Verwaltungsmodernisierung in Richtung einer verstärkten Bürgerorientierung, sind in den letzten Jahren aber durch lange Wartezeiten und Klagen von Seiten der Mitarbeiterschaft über sich verschlechternde Arbeitsbedingungen unter Druck geraten. In der Studie wird eine umfassende Analyse der aktuellen organisatorischen, personellen und technischen Situation in den deutschen Bürgerämtern vorgenommen. Im Ergebnis zeigen sich ein Organisationswandel insbesondere durch die Einführung von Terminsprechstunden und die zunehmende Nutzung digitaler Verwaltungsprozesse. Trotz einer unbestrittenen Zunahme der Arbeitsbelastung der Mitarbeiter besteht übereinstimmend eine hohe Zufriedenheit mit den Leistungen der Bürgerämter durch die Bürgermeister, Personalräte und Bürger. Notwendig sind weitere personelle Investitionen und ein Ausbau der Reformanstrengungen in Richtung einer größeren Nutzerfreundlichkeit von Online-Angeboten.
