Encompassing a wide variety of genres, media and art forms across a broad historical scope, this open access book identifies central strategies of serialization in Shakespeare’s plays and their adaptations.Beginning with an introduction that theorizes the method of reading Shakespeare serially on page, stage and screen, the first section investigates Shakespeare himself as a serial writer and serial rewritings of Shakespeare by Joyce and Beckett. Shakespeare and Seriality then moves to a series of case studies of performative seriality from the early modern stage to theatre, film and ballet in the 20th and 21st centuries. It culminates in the analysis of adaptations of Shakespeare in complex TV series, including Succession, the postapocalyptic series Station Eleven and the cosy crime series Shakespeare and Hathaway. This book investigates Shakespeare’s seriality from various theoretical perspectives and through multiple methods, including gender and queer theory, ecocriticism, memory and heritage studies, psychoanalysis, empathy studies and fandom studies, reception history and theatre history.Examining serial reading as a method of establishing intertextual and intermedial links, this volume contributes to recent developments in adaptation studies including the debate between Shakespeare and ‘not-Shakespeare’.The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Centre of Cultural Inquiry (ZKF) and the Publication Fund of the University of Konstanz.

Covering a broad historical spectrum from Greek Antiquity to the 21st century, this open access book asks how tragedy's formal features have impacted its travels, and how these travels have shaped its forms.Bringing together an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars of classics, English, German and French literature, postcolonial literature, musicology and theatre and performance studies, it provides a multifaceted overview of form processes related to travelling. It presents tragedy as a dynamic figuration that emerges, stabilizes and transforms through relocation and adaptation. The collection begins with the tragedies of Antiquity and then investigates the 17th and 18th centuries, from Shakespeare to Voltaire, as a laboratory for the formal transformation of tragedy, inextricably linked to the social and political changes of that time. The volume concludes with travelling tragedies in the 20th and 21st centuries. This section focuses on two former colonies on the African continent (Nigeria and South Africa) as an exemplary field for exploring form travel in the postcolonial, globalized present, in which tragic forms have become transcultural and are circulating so fast that they can no longer be easily related to concepts of locality, nation or continent. Arguing that the strategies that made tragedy portable also expanded its formal potential, this book also discusses the migration of tragedy as a process of form itself. While adaptation studies frequently focuses on the political dimensions of transcultural modifications of tragic plots, this book suggests that formal concerns are also political and social matters. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. This study takes a fresh look at the abundant scenarios of disguise in early modern prose fiction and suggests reading them in the light of the contemporary religio-political developments. More specifically, it argues that Elizabethan narratives adopt aspects of the heated Eucharist debate during the Reformation, including officially renounced notions like transubstantiation, to negotiate culturally pressing concerns regarding identity change. Drawing on the rich field of research on the adaptation of pre-Reformation concerns in Anglican England, the book traces a cross-fertilisation between the Reformation and the literary mode of romance. The study brings together topics which are currently being strongly debated in early modern studies: the turn to religion, a renewed interest in aesthetics, and a growing engagement with prose fiction.Narratives which are discussed in detail are William Baldwin’s Beware the Cat, Robert Greene’s Pandosto and Menaphon, Philip Sidney’s Old and New Arcadia, and Thomas Lodge’s Rosalynd and A Margarite of America, George Gascoigne’s Steele Glas, John Lyly’s Euphues: An Anatomy of Wit and Euphues and his England, Barnabe Riche’s Farewell, Greene’s A Quip for an Upstart Courtier, and Thomas Nashe’s The Unfortunate Traveller.
