The volume discusses nudity and clothing in the Hebrew Bible, covering anthropological, theological, archaeology and religious-historical aspects. This study presents the first analysis of all the heptadically structured models of Jewish history from the time of the Second Temple. It deals with Daniel 9, the Ethiopian Book of Henoch, the Book of Jubilees, the Qumran texts and the Testament of Levi. Detailed individual exegesis shows that each text displays an individual theology of history. There is no universally valid reference chronology behind those commonalities which can be registered; instead, the writers work with the same chronological traditions, but restructure them according to their own theological interests.

Obwohl biblische Bücher in der Antike auf einzelnen Rollen überliefert wurden, entsprechen sie nicht einem modernen Verständnis von Büchern als kohärente und in sich geschlossene Erzähleinheiten. Vor allem die Bücher der Gründungserzählung Israels in Genesis-2 Könige bilden einen größeren narrativen Zusammenhang. Dies wirft die Frage auf, wie sich die Aufteilung des Textes auf unterschiedliche Rollen zu seiner Kompositionsgeschichte verhält. Wurden die jeweiligen Bücher von Anfang an als getrennte Teile eines mehrbändigen Werkes (sei es Pentateuch, Hexateuch, DtrG oder Enneateuch) konzipiert, oder hat man es mit einer komplexeren Entwicklung ursprünglich unabhängiger Teilkompositionen zu tun, die erst durch eine spätere Redaktion verbunden oder getrennt wurden? Der vorliegende Band geht diesen Fragen am Beispiel der Übergänge zwischen den Büchern Genesis/Exodus und Josua/Richter nach, die sich offensichtlich in Abhängigkeit voneinander entwickelt haben.

Der vorliegende Band geht diesen Fragen am Beispiel der Übergänge des Buches Deuteronomium nach, dessen relative Eigenständigkeit ihm eine Schlüsselstellung in der literarhistorischen Hypothesenbildung zuweist.

Die hier vorgelegte, umfassende Edition beider Versionen von Avot de-Rabbi Natan tritt die Nachfolge der verdienstvollen, aber seit langem veralteten Edition Salomon Schechters von 1887 an. Sie stellt der künftigen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit eine gegenüber Schechter bedeutend erweiterte Textgrundlage zur Verfügung. Moderner Editionstechnik rabbinischer Werke entsprechend stellt sie die Textzeugen nebeneinander, ohne ihre Lesarten zu verändern oder zu bewerten. Die Synopsen erlauben erstmals einen Überblick über die gesamte direkte handschriftliche Evidenz und lassen dabei die Uneinheitlichkeit der Überlieferung jeder der beiden Versionen klar erkennen. Avot de-Rabbi Natan A wird in einer großen, doppelseitig angelegten Synopse mit zwei Anhängen dargeboten, Avot de-Rabbi Natan B in einer wegen der geringeren Zahl der Textzeugen weniger umfangreichen Synopse. Parallelenlisten und ein benutzerfreundliches Verweissystem am Rande der Synopsen ermöglichen einen problemlosen Vergleich der Versionen. Die Einleitung beschreibt eingehend alle verwendeten Handschriften.
