This open access book explores the recent developments automated driving and Car2x-communications are opening up attractive opportunities future mobility. The DFG priority program “Cooperatively Interacting Automobiles” has focused on the scientific foundations for communication-based automated cooperativity in traffic. Communication among traffic participants allows for safe and convenient traffic that will emerge in swarm like flow. This book investigates requirements for a cooperative transport system, motion generation that is safe and effective and yields social acceptance by all road users, as well as appropriate system architectures and robust cooperative cognition. For many years, traffic will not be fully automated, but automated vehicles share their space with manually driven vehicles, two-wheelers, pedestrians, and others. Such a mixed traffic scenario exhibits numerous facets of potential cooperation. Automated vehicles must understand basic principles of human interaction in traffic situations. Methods for the anticipation of human movement as well as methods for generating behavior that can be anticipated by others are required. Explicit maneuver coordination among automated vehicles using Car2X-communications allows generation of safe trajectories within milliseconds, even in safety-critical situations, in which drivers are unable to communicate and react, whereas today's vehicles delete their information after passing through a situation, cooperatively interacting automobiles should aggregate their knowledge in a collective data and information base and make it available to subsequent traffic.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 1, University of Vienna (Institut fur Anglistik/Amerikanistik), language: English, abstract: In this paper I will discuss the concept and the historical origin of political correctness in America and how it managed its way to Great Britain. The discussion will be followed by a section, describing my own research. The main purpose of this investigation is to determine if "e;political correctness"e; exists in Great Britain and if there are differences between newspapers and magazines. In 1990 and 1991 the political correctness debates started in the USA. These debates received great attention in the media as a series of articles in Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, the New York Times, Time, the Village Voice, and Atlantic Monthly was written. It was also featured in numerous magazine covers and nationwide talk shows on TV. (c.f. Calhoun 2001: 1337). Due to this great popularity it has been a "e;'household word' in Anglophone North America since the early 1990"e; (Auer 2004: 3). Nonetheless it is very hard to define. The terms "e;politically correct"e; and "e;political correctness"e; came from the Left movement, where it was used ironically to describe people who were too orthodox. Now it is often used by the Right to describe the Left. Its meaning has also been blurred by the mass media. The stems of the concept are most likely situated in the social movement culture of the late sixties. Important movements are "e;The American Civil Rights movement"e;, "e;The Women's Liberation"e; and "e;The Gay and Lesbian Liberation"e;. Political correctness came to Great Britain shortly after it boomed in the US. Its development was similar, but on a much lower scale. My own research showed that there were more occurrences of words with a man suffix in newspapers than in magazines. The most surprising fact was, that there was not even one word with the suffix person. I had to restrict research area to the suffixes of man, woman and person, otherwise it would have gone beyond the scope of my paper. Keywords: political correctness, politische Korrektheit, Diskriminierung, Vorurteile,

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, University of Vienna, language: English, abstract: In this paper I investigate the development of characterisation in the play "e;Our Country's Good"e; by Timberlake Wertenbaker. The term characterisation refers to the way new characters are introduced and created. Throughout my analysis I will propose that a character has a specific trait, which I will back up with empirical evidence such as passages from the book where characters are characterized explicitly. This paper will also be shaped by the following central questions: Which methods are used by what means? What does the author achieve by using these techniques? Which techniques are combined with which characters and why? However, a full discussion of all the characters in the book would go beyond the scope of this paper, since the play includes 22 characters in no more than 91 pages (cf. Wischenbart, 93). This led me to a completely different approach, namely to single out two of the main characters in the play and juxtapose them in terms of characterisation and character development. But before I turn to the full analysis of my central topic, I will clarify the exceedingly important role characterization plays in drama and define the different main concepts and techniques of it. The relevancy and great impact of the process of characterisation to the reader becomes clear when literature on the theory of drama is examined. According to Hoffmann, drama depends on the presentation of fictional personalities as the principal vehicle to communicate the message the artists want to convey (Hoffmann, 1).

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1, University of Vienna, language: English, abstract: In this paper I will discuss two different approaches investigating the nature of language and the relation between language and thought: (1) the Sapir-Whorf-hypothesis (also called theory of linguistic relativity) and (2) the metaphor approach of Lakoff and Johnson (1980). Both theories had a major impact on the scientific community when they were published and sparked important research but also major controversy and debate among many scholars. The main reason for their controversial reception was that both theories called into question the very foundation of the dominant view on language and thought, which is still very much alive. The present paper is divided into six chapters. After this introduction, the second chapter will outline the traditional objectivist view of fixed meaning and metaphor, which is still prevalent in Western societies. In the third chapter I will briefly portray the Sapir-Whorf-hypothesis. The fourth chapter will deal with Lakoff and Johnson's approach to understanding language. In the following chapter, I reflect on both theory complexes, try to apply my theoretical knowledge and point out the similarities and differences of both approaches. Furthermore, I will try to suggest a few ideas around which both approaches could be combined. The sixth chapter is an evaluation. As already indicated above, the current paper will be shaped by the two central questions: Does language influence or even determine the way we think? How important is the concept of metaphor when investigating the everyday use of language?
