This handbook in two volumes synthesises our knowledge about the ecology of Central Europe’s plant cover with its 7000-yr history of human impact, covering Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic and Slovakia. Based on a thorough literature review with 5500 cited references and nearly 1000 figures and tables, the two books review in 26 chapters all major natural and man-made vegetation types with their climatic and edaphic influences, the structure and dynamics of their communities, the ecophysiology of important plant species, and key aspects of ecosystem functioning. Volume I deals with forests and scrub vegetation and analyses the ecology of Central Europe’s tree flora, whilst Volume II is dedicated to the non-forest vegetation covering mires, grasslands, heaths, alpine habitats and urban vegetation. The consequences of over-use, pollution and recent climate change over the last century are explored and conservation issues addressed.

Tropical rainforests disappear at an alarming rate causing unprecedented losses in biodiversity and ecosystem services. The stability of rainforest margins has an ecological and socio-economic dimension, and understanding the multidisciplinary nature of land-use changes in tropical rainforest margins is the key to identifying development objectives such as mitigation of biodiversity loss and poverty reduction. The chapters in this book cover a broad range of topical research areas, from impacts of different forest-use intensities, sustainable management of agroforestry to integrated land-use concepts.

A drought experiment conducted in a cacao agroforestry plantation showed that this plantation was surprisingly resilient to an induced drought of more than a year (Schwendenmann et al. 2009). However, droughts can have a strong impact on household incomes from agriculture, they strongly a?ect the vulnerability to poverty and thus have to be analyzed as important exogenous shocks to households, forcing them to adjust their behaviour and develop strategies to cope with these problems. The stability of rainforest margins is a critical factor in the protection of tropical rainforests (Tscharntke et al. 2007). At present, however, rainf- est margins in many parts of the tropics are far from stable, both in soc- economic and in ecological terms. For example, protected areas may attract, rather than repel, human settlement, which may be due to international donor investment in national conservation programs (Wittemeyer et al. 2008). An alternative hypothesis is that protected areas might be compromised if leakage takes place, that is, if impacts that would take place inside the restricted area are displaced to a nearby, undisturbed area (Ewers and Rodrigues 2008).

Das Buch stellt eine Bestandsaufnahme dar, welche Veränderungen in der terrestrischen Vegetation der Erde bereits heute mit Gewissheit oder hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit durch den Klimawandel eingetreten sind. Grundlage dieser Bilanz bilden empirische Daten zu Veränderungen in der Zusammensetzung, Vitalität und Produktivität der Vegetation, die durch die Ergebnisse von Experimenten ergänzt werden, um Kausalitäten besser aufzeigen zu können. So werden, geordnet nach Biomen, die weitreichenden Folgen für die terrestrischen Ökosysteme der Erde aufgezeigt. Die Klimaerwärmung und von ihr abhängige Effekte auf den Wasserkreislauf und die Kryosphäre verändern die Standortbedingungen für die Vegetation. Die Konsequenzen für die Verbreitung und Konkurrenzfähigkeit von Arten sowie für die Biodiversität, Produktivität und den Wasser-, Kohlenstoff- und Nährstoffhaushalt von Ökosystemen werden im Detail besprochen.Der Leser soll so in die Lage versetzt werden, die Folgen des bereits eingetretenen Klimawandels für die Vegetation zu beurteilen.
