The Handbuch der Stadtbaukunst is a compendium of essential urban design expertise. Using 150 examples from over 70 German cities, it illustrates, analyzes, and compares a wide range of urban spaces, courtyards, squares, and streets. The four-volume work impressively documents the qualities of European cities described in the Leipzig Charter: beauty and durability, mixed usage, social diversity, density, and the separation of public and private spaces. Editor Christoph Mäckler builds on textbooks of the early twentieth century by Cornelius Gurlitt, Raymond Unwin, and Josef Stubben and offers a well-grounded framework for city planning. Featuring contributions by Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, Christoph Mackler, Werner Oechslin, Alexander Pellnitz, Jan Pieper, Birgit Roth, Mirjam Schmidt, Wolfgang Sonne, Jurg Sulzer and Anne Pfeil, and Thomas Will

The foundational research work Der Eckhausgrundriss by the Deutsches Institut für Stadtbaukunst categorizes examples of corner building layouts from the past 200 years. With the help of these varied floor plans, it explains the principles to bear in mind when designing urban corner buildings. As such, it serves as an architectural aid in the design of corner buildings—an essential element of urban blocks—as well as clarifying the relationship between these buildings and the morphology of the city. The editors demonstrate that thoughtfully planned corner buildings, whether free-standing or attached, are required for the design of clearly defined urban spaces, as they have decisive impact on the spatial quality of the adjoining streets and squares. The third edition of this volume expands the collection of corner building floor plans with examples realized by twenty-nine architects in recent years, as well as a number of classic corner building layouts. In doing so, it further showcases the renewed importance of this type of building in contemporary architectural practice.

The Flügelhaus—a residential building with wings extending to the rear from a main structure on the street—is a type of European urban architecture well suited to contemporary needs. Its rear wings serve a variety of purposes—social, ecological, and economic, reflecting carefully considered urban design. Creating courtyards and gardens, they also reduce street space and lower infrastructure costs. The book demonstrates how this European typology supports key concepts in today’s city planning and urban design, including the sponge city, the social city, and the compact city. A sunlight study, insights into climate-conscious and energy-efficient construction, and examples of both subsidized and market-rate housing leave no doubt: Flügelhäuser help create vibrant, livable urban spaces. Following Der Eckhausgrundriss, Der Flügelhausgrundriss is the second volume in the series Bücher zur Stadbaukunst, which explores typologies of European housing. The upcoming volume Gewerbehofhäuser, scheduled for 2026, will complete the trilogy. In-depth analysis and design concepts for various social housing floor plans Floor plan and isometric diagrams illustrating the sunlight study A practical perspective on balancing quality and cost in rental housing

Given current sustainability requirements, the quality of the built city—its buildings and public spaces—takes on a particular importance. Yet many municipalities complain about a shortage of experts who are capable of effectively designing cities, urban districts, and urban spaces. Building on the 2014 Cologne declaration on urban design education, ‟Die Stadt zuerst” (‟The City First”), the fourteenth Konferenz zur Schönheit und Lebensfähigkeit der Stadt (Conference on the Beauty and Viability of the City) seeks to circumscribe the requisite professional expertise: what do urban planners need to know in order to design and realize sustainable and resilient cities? They require a solid knowledge concerning suitable street infrastructures, sizes, and shapes of blocks, plot configurations, and building types, for a start. Beyond this, they also need the ability to shape urban spaces and their surfaces so that they remain attractive over the long-term and develop characteristic local atmospheres. Critically examines academic teaching in the fields of urban development and urban design Serves as a stimulus regarding current issues such as the fragmentation of planning processes Contains contributions by renowned experts from both research and practice

The urban courtyard and its far-reaching significance for the development of neighborhoods was the topic of the 15th Konferenz zur Schönheit und Lebenfähigkeit der Stadt (Conference on the Beauty and Viability of the City). The division of the city into public and private spaces is a fundamental quality of urban planning because it provides residents with open spaces, gardens, and courtyards on the property, which they can take care of together. This self-organized arrangement strengthens social interaction and promotes democratic behavior in daily negociations with the house community. In lectures and discussions, experts examine social, urban planning, transportation, ecological, and architectural aspects of urban courtyards. The beauty of public spaces is a key element in changing the future role of city centers from retail to the provision of a space for enjoyment and relaxation. Streets and squares with building facades that augment the city’s image will become the deciding factor in how appealing it is to visitors. An increase in living, working, and cultural offerings in the city will further in greater vitality in urban areas. We can still turn the economic crisis, which has been significantly increased by the pandemic, into an opportunity: How do we want to redesign our cities? The Konferenz zur Schonheit und Lebensfahigkeit der Stadt (Conference on the Beauty and Livability of Cities) has devoted itself to fundamental questions in urban development for over a decade. The contributions in this volume combine economic, social, ecological, and mobility questions concerning city-center development with architectural and urban planning considerations.

The Deutsches Institut für Stadtbaukunst argues that small, dense cities offer the best conditions for long-term functioning as eco-friendly green cities. In order to plan the necessary sustainable revegetation of urban parks, streets, and courtyards, we must first answer the overarching question of how climate protection and resilience measures can integrated into beautiful, livable cities. For over a decade, the Konferenz zur Schönheit und Lebensfähigkeit der Stadt has dedicated itself to fundamental questions in urban development. The contributions in this volume present discussions of integrated approaches to the green city from experts in both theory and practice across a range of different disciplines, as well as from the heads of various German city planning departments.
