Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1,0, Indiana University (Department of Political Science), course: Politics of International Development, language: English, abstract: Botswana is a landlocked country in southern Africa with a population of about 2 million people. It used to be one of the poorest countries in Africa, but after it gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1966, it went on a transformation to a middle-income country with a per capita GDP of $16,800 in 2012 (cf. Central Intelligence Agency 2013). Today, Botswana is a multi-ethnic and multi-party representative democracy with "e;inclusive institutions"e; and the least corrupt country in Sub-Saharan Africa (cf. Transparency International 2012). It is ranked by Freedom House as "e;Free"e; and has a very high HIV rate of 24.8%. Botswana has been framed as an exceptional economic success story in Africa and the following essay will explore whether institutions are the only cause of Botswana s economic success and if Botswana is experiencing modern economic growth.

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1,0, Indiana University (Department of Political Science), course: Politics of International Development, language: English, abstract: In the past three decades China improved the living conditions of its population dramatically and alleviated millions out of poverty. China achieved a tenfold increase in GDP since 1978, became the world's largest exporter in 2010 and is the second largest economy in the world after the U.S. (cf. Central Intelligence Agency 2013). Overall, China's rise in the past thirty years has been unprecedented in its scale. The following essay will address the question of how to explain China s economic success in the past three decades (2.2) and in doing so, start out with an analysis of its political success (2.1). In a second step, it will be explored if China s success is sustainable in the long-term (2.3).

Literature Review from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 1,0, Indiana University (Department of Political Science), course: Politics of International Development, language: English, abstract: "e;After all, we have spent billions of dollars on aid. [...] Has it done any good? And sadly, we don't know. And worst of all, we will never know."e; (Duflo 2010, 01:37)Poverty alleviation is a huge humanitarian challenge and also the supreme discipline of some economists. The effort to fight poverty had a mixed success so far and scholars claim different reasons for that outcome (cf. Besley 2012). In Poor Economics , Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo avoid the often polemic Sachs vs. Easterly aid debate and promise a radical rethinking of the way to fight global poverty : They make a convincing case about learning on the lives of the poor and the unique choices they have to face in their lives. Banerjee/Duflo understand how the poor perceive their conditions and come to the decision they make and are therefore able to craft better strategies and interventions that actually help the poor and do not produce unintended consequences. By doing that, they deliberately target the micro-level and leave out the level of politics or institutions, which is somewhat problematic, to search effective approaches in answers of the smaller questions. This essay is structured in the following way: After an introduction to the analysis (2.) and an overview of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs), the main method of Banerjee/Duflo (2.1), the analysis will provide an assessment of key examples of the two scholars research (2.2). Subsequently, an evaluation of limitations (2.3) and shortcomings (2.4) of the book will be conducted. By evaluating the approach and findings of Poor Economics , the essay will be able to compare it with other scholarly works (3.). A conclusion (4.) will summarize the review and end with a personal take on what has been learned through studying the book.

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, grade: 1,0, Indiana University (Department of International Studies), course: Nations, States and Boundaries, language: English, abstract: In a continually globalizing world, the question of identity becomes more and more prevalent among societies. What is identity? How do we define it? Across the world individuals are seeking to belong to something that can define them and give them something to set them apart from the other seven billion people in residency on the planet. However, also as these questions become increasingly important, conflicts can arise between different ethnic, cultural, or societal groups. Presently, one of the more notable examples of this is that of the Kurds and their continued struggle for a state of their own. The Kurds make up "e;the largest nation in the world without its own independent state"e; (Gunter 2004: 197). Spread across Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Syria, and even small parts of Armenia (cf. Yavuz 1998: 9), the Kurds are a scattered people across various state borders. With this in mind, can one speak legitimately of a Kurdish 'nation' and if so would creating an independent Kurdish state truly benefit the Kurdish people?

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - Region: USA, grade: 1,0, Indiana University (Department of Political Science), course: Comparative Foreign Policy - Persian Gulf Simulation, language: English, abstract: The Persian Gulf and its littoral states Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and Oman have witnessed several conflicts over the last decades. They have seen the Iran-Iraq war from 1980-1988 and the two Gulf Wars with U.S. involvement, that made the Persian Gulf a highly volatile region. Historically, the actions taken by America in the region have been driven by mainly two interests: First, ensuring a continued flow of oil exports of the countries and second, preventing a regional hegemon dominating the politics of the Persian Gulf. These interests had been brought to paper with the Carter Doctrine in 1980 in light of the growing assertiveness of the Soviet Union in the Persian Gulf. Since 9/11, there is also the interest of counterterrorism and today, another power after the Soviet Union tries to seize regional hegemony. The Persian Gulf is now home to a country ruled by a regime that wants to destroy the Israeli state and supports terrorist organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas to further destabilize the region. Furthermore, unrest or even clashes between Sunnis and Shiites in the Persian Gulf countries are possible as they are either majority or minority in a state and oppressed by the antagonistic ruling group. Iran is the main representative of the Shiites, while the GCC countries are ruled by Sunni leaders. The goal of this paper will be to show awareness of the problems in the Persian Gulf, address U.S. interests in the region, identify threats to these interests and provide policy recommendations in how the United States should pursue its Foreign Policy in the Persian Gulf. As this analysis is written through the lens of the Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs the Foreign Policy perspective drawn out in this paper shall check the Presidents policy and be ultimately determined by and for the interests and well-being of the American people.

Literature Review from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - Region: USA, grade: 1,0, Indiana University (Department of Political Science), course: United States Foreign Policy, language: English, abstract: The future of America's position in the world is a hotly debated topic and this paper will review two books on American power and military capability. Zbigniew Brzezinski observes in "e;Strategic Vision"e; that a shift in world power occurs and so has to change the strategy of the USA. He assesses different liabilities and assets that need to be considered in dealing with these changes. Rachel Maddow however has a different emphasis in "e;Drift"e; and is concerned about the development of perpetual American war and the responsible but unchecked executive branch. In the following will be argued that while other nations may rise, the USA can still sustain its position of power, if it considers the research of Brzezinski and Maddow to be of relevance. Reforms at home and readiness to transition into a world shared with nations that rise or come back to their old greatness will be needed to use America's power and resources in the future more wisely. America will continue to be a world power if it avoids mistakes it makes right now at home and embraces the new realities of the world.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: 1,0, Indiana University (Department of Political Science), course: Politics of Genocide, language: English, abstract: "e;Until now, when powerful men committed crimes against humanity, they knew that so long as they remained powerful, no earthly court could judge them."e; (Annan, Kofi, 07.28.1998) These words of Kofi Annan, at that time secretary-general of the United Nations, were spoken shortly after the adoption of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). They reflect the international effort to investigate and prosecute cruel crimes against humanity, war crimes, the crime of aggression and genocide. The intent of this paper is to present a stance on the question whether international indictments for crimes of mass murder in Darfur are appropriate and justified. It will be argued, that the international community has to punish perpetrators of mass violence under certain conditions, because of the following crucial points: (2.1) The international community has the moral and legal obligation to do so, (2.3) international justice should be pursued independently of regards to the peace process, (2.4) it may deter others and possibly produce domestic pressures and changes. Moreover, to be able to develop guidelines and policy recommendations the paper will also consider (2.2) the types of international punishment and who carries them out, as well as (2.5) examine the real capability of punishment and criteria of success. Before doing so, it is inevitable to (1.1) introduce the conflict, (1.2) the genocide debate and (1.3) the international response to the killings, because the stance on the use of international justice in Darfur is ultimately shaped by the interpretation of these issues.

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1,0, Indiana University (Department of Political Science), course: Politics of International Development, language: English, abstract: "e;Great Divergence"e; is the term used to describe the economical asymmetry that happened between the West and other parts of the world. To explain the process of the Great Divergence, a two-step analysis is necessary: Why was Britain in the position to industrialize and why could the other parts of the world not follow the quest of Industrialization, which led ultimately to the Great Divergence? The Industrial Revolution in Britain and its diffusion to Western Europe was the single most important event for the Great Divergence to happen. Britain had unique geopolitical contingencies on its side and was able to pull of the Industrialization due to the functionality of its centralized state and its achieved dominance in international trade. Other parts of the world, namely India and China, did not industrialize because they lacked the incentives Britain had and, in addition to that, they were also held back by dynamics of colonialism or internal struggles. The paper is structured in the following way: After a brief prologue and a look at a contested issue in the field (2.), the explanation will start out with processes and developments that were necessary in leading to the Industrial Revolution and Great Divergence (2.1). The next step is reserved for an in-depth analysis of the Industrial Revolution in Britain contrasted with a look at reasons for a lack of such an event in India and China (2.2). By looking at the diffusion of Industrialization in the West and factors that prevented any sort of that in the East (2.3), an understanding of the Great Divergence will be provided and ultimately finalized and comprehensively summarized in the conclusion (3.).
