Case-basedlearning has become a common instructional method across higher education andis likely to be encountered in all disciplines. Its essence is a focus on realsituations which require diagnosis and treatment. In Case-based Learning in Higher Education it is explored by theEditors and contributors within the three separate but interrelated themes ofconcepts, theories and outcomes.  The advantages of using cases are that they tend toresonate with students because of their realism and authenticity, and theirexperiential nature provides specific examples of theory in context. They alsorequire students to practise their analytical, logical, and other high-orderthinking skills, and provide opportunities for work in teams. The downside isthat cases are not personal, so students have no stake in the ‘company’ or‘organisation’ and cannot truly empathise with the protagonists.But overall, the strength and value of the case method isclear, as is demonstrated by these eleven detailed descriptions of its use in avariety of different contexts internationally. Each of the cases described herecontains key lessons about the value of case-based learning and the benefits itdelivers.  There are also ideas aboutdesign approaches which can increase the effectiveness of cases. One of the keyconclusions is that, since case-based learning requires students to negotiate, argue, and reflect ontheir knowledge, they develop more responsibility and independence, therebyimproving their personal and interpersonal skills. This process can have a demonstrable impact on student self-esteem andself-confidence, both of which increase a student’s employability in the professional world which facestoday’s and tomorrow’s graduates from higher education.

The book highlights the advances of environmental pollution management on ports and coastal zones. Particular attention is given to water quality, issues that concern the marine environment of sea corridors and coastal waters, especially in regions surrounding ports. In addition to these topics the chapters explore novel methodologies and technologies, IT solutions, data and instrumentation of monitoring water quality. This book constitutes a notable contribution to investigate and present the capabilities of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and their applicability and usefulness in environmental-related applications and sciences. The focus is on the design, creation, development and operation of integrated Web-based GIS applications for weather, marine and atmospheric environments, and the Earth's magnetic field. More specifically, the aim of this book is to present characteristic applications of GIS to environmental monitoring including GIS solutions for eco-mapping sea and port-related parameters, climate changes, and geomagnetic field.      In the first part of the book, the description of every application includes the user requirements, the design and development stages performed and the presentation of the final outcome, its capabilities and services. The Web-based applications are developed through different innovative approaches, such as cloud GIS and Google Apps for GIS, justifying the merit of WebGIS in the world of the environmental applications. The second part of the book provides an overview of geomagnetic field parameters and reveals the potential of using GIS for modeling and analyzing of the Earth's magnetic (geomagnetic) field and its parameters. Here, the authors present the recently introduced phenomenon called “geomagnetic pseudostorm”, which is modeled and further analyzed here with GIS technology and tools.    This book appeals to those interested in various areas where spatial information becomes of paramount relevance (e.g. social and economic research and mapping, environmental and climate research, decision support systems, public services, and especially for geomagnetic field variations and for the design of warning systems for natural disasters).
