"Since 1975, French literary writing has been marked by an autobiographical turn which has seen authors increasingly often tap into the vein of what the French term ecriture de soi. This coincides, paradoxically, with the ''death of autobiography'', as these authors self-consciously distance themselves and their writings from conventional autobiography, founding a ''nouvelle autobiographie'' where the very possibility of autobiographical expression is questioned. In the first book-length study in English to address this phenomenon, Claire Boyle sheds a new light on this hostility toward autobiography through a series of ground-breaking studies of estrangement in autobiographical works by major post-war authors Nathalie Sarraute, Georges Perec, Jean Genet and Helene Cixous. She identifies autobiography as a site of conflict between writer and reader, as authors struggle to assert the unknowableness of their identity in the face of a readership resolutely desiring privileged knowledge. Autobiography emerges as a deeply troubling genre for authors, with the reader as an antagonistic consumer of the autobiographical self."

Just in time for the holidays, the sixty-ninth issue of our National Magazine Award-winning McSweeney’s Quarterly is a gift to adventurous readers. Featuring an irresistible mix of original fiction from daring new voices and beloved favorites, this issue is certain to delight one and all. Often hilarious and always surprising, these are tales of contemporary life flipped and twisted, skewed and skewered.Inside this supermarket pulp-inspired paperback featuring cover art by Benjamin Marra, readers will find a novelette about a sex co-op by Lydia Conklin; a relato about Veracruz dockworkers by Fernanda Melchor; a story about an eccentric childhood neighbor by Julie Hecht; speculative fiction about mothers and daughters in the apocalypse by Siqi Liu; a shocking tale of baby bath time by Zach Williams; a DeafBlind remix of an ancient Indian fable by John Lee Clark; an encounter with your dimmer, more winsome doppelgänger by Yohanca Delgado; and much more. Not only that, we’ve gathered for you painfully new fiction about feral “glamping” trips (Max Delsohn) and mysterious deep-fakers (Mikkel Rosengaard), ghoulish bachelorette parties (Mel Kassel) and obstreperous crank-yankers (Evan James)—all topped off by an extended post-breakup stay at your nearest fast-food joint (Leila Renee). Prepare to be entertained by letters from Ikechukwu Ufomadu, April Ayers Lawson, Anelise Chen, Bianca Giaever, and Ricardo Frasso Jaramillo; drift away to a trash-strewn island in a full-color psychedelic comic by Connor Willumsen.Compiled by visiting editor James Yeh, McSweeney’s 69 is a vast topography of literary thrills and spills that you’ll return to again and again. Ever changing, each issue of the quarterly is completely redesigned (there have been hardcovers and paperbacks, an issue with two spines, an issue with a magnetic binding, an issue that looked like a bundle of junk mail, and an issue that looked like a sweaty human head), but always brings you the very best in new literary fiction.

Featuring Stephen Graham Jones's Lover's Lane, reprinted in the The Best Horror of the Year. Our first-ever issue-length foray into horror, and featuring one of our biggest lineups in some time, our seventy-first issue is one for the ages. Guest edited by Brian Evenson, McSweeney's 71:The Monstrous and the Terrible is a hair-raising collection of fiction that will challenge the notion of what horror has been, and suggest what twenty-first-century horror is and can be. And it's all packaged in a mind-bending, nesting-doll-like series of interlocking slipcases that must be seen to be believed. There's Stephen Graham Jones's eerie take on the alien abduction story, Mariana Enríquez's haunting tale of childhood hijinks gone awry, and Jeffrey Ford on a writer who loses control of his characters. Nick Antosca (cocreator of the award-winning TV series The Act) spins out a novelette about the hidden horrors of wine country. There's Kristine OngMuslim exploring environmental horror in the Philippines; a sharp-edged folk tale by Gabino Iglesias, and Diné writer Natanya Ann Pulley reimagining sci-fi horror from an indigenous perspective. Hungarian writer Attila Veres proffers a dark take on the not-so-hidden sociopathy of multi-level marketing. And Erika T. Wurth explores the dark gaps leading to other worlds. If that weren't enough: an excerpt from a new novel by Brandon Hobson; a chilling allegorical horror story by Senaa Ahmad; a Lovecraftian bildungsroman by Lincoln Michel; unsettling dream cities from Nick Mamatas; M. T. Anderson's exceptionally weird take on babysitting; and, improbably, much more.
