The Hundred Years War has been the focus of much scholarly work over the past decades. In this collection of fifteen studies, Clifford J. Rogers treats numerous aspects of the war, with particular emphasis on the reign of Edward III. "War," wrote Gen. William T. Sherman, "is cruelty, and you cannot refine it." Throughout history, noncombatants have always been among the victims of war's violence. In this book, nine distinguished historians examine twenty-five hundred years of human conflicts and their varied impacts on civilian society. Each case study examines not only what military forces did to noncombatants in the area of their operations, but why they did it and how they justified their actions. The focus, however, remains firmly on the practical realities of war, not on normative theories or the prescriptions of the "laws of war." The patterns that emerge from the nine case studies are not simple ones. Some of the same factors and pressures appear again and again, though the balance among them and the ultimate outcome vary greatly. We see how often devastation has served as a tool of coercive diplomacy, but also how logistic considerations have greatly affected the calculus of pillage versus restraint. Medieval WarfareThe twenty-first volume of the Journal of Medieval Military History begins with three studies examining aspects of warfare in the Latin East: an archaeological report on the defenses of Jerusalem by Shimon Gibson and Rafael Y. Lewis; a study of how military victories and defeats (viewed through the lens of carefully shaped reporting) affected the reputation, and the flow of funds and recruits to, the Military Orders, by Nicolas Morton; and an exploration of how the Kingdom of Jerusalem quickly recovered its military strength after the disaster of Hattin by Stephen Donnachie. Turning to the other side of the Mediterranean, Donald J. Kagay analyzes how Jaime I of Aragon worked to control violence within his realms by limiting both castle construction and the use of mechanical artillery. Guilhem Pépin also addresses the limitation of violence, using new documents to show that the Black Prince's sack of Limoges in 1370 was not the unrestrained bloodbath described by Froissart. The remaining three contributions deal with aspects of open battle. Michael John Harbinson offers a large-scale study of when and why late-medieval men-at-arms chose to dismount and fight on foot instead of acting tactically as cavalry. Laurence W. Marvin reconsiders the Battle of Bouvines, concluding that it was far from being a ritualized mass duel. Finally, Michael Livingston elucidates some principles for understanding medieval battles in general, and the battle of Agincourt in particular.

Sven Ekdahl looks at the big picture of the role of Swedish castles in the north; L. J. Andrew Villalon focuses on the very particular and culturally significant rewards given by the Catholic Kings to two noble families to celebrate minor victories on the borders of Granada in the far south. Subjects include fighting at the tactical level (the unexpectedly substantial tradition of mounted archery in England, the Low Countries and France, revealed by Sanders Goevarts), the operational level (Emperor Louis II's logistics in Italy, treated by Elijah T. Wallace), and the strategic level (King John's employment of naval power, analyzed by Adam M. McNeil). Vladimir Aleksić and Damnjan Prlinčević consider military, political, geographical, demographic, and economic factors to contextualize the military history of the rich mining town of Novo Brdo in Serbia as it faced the rising tide of Ottoman conquest in the last century of the Middle Ages. Three contributions draw on the rich resources of the English royal archives to illuminate the material and technological tools of medieval warfare: individual weapons (most significantly both longbows and short bows) described with exceptional detail in a murder case of 1315 (Clifford J. Rogers); the horses of Henry V in the Agincourt campaign of 1415 (Gary P. Baker); and the military equipment stored at Dover Castle as described in inventories dating from 1320 to 1437 (Dan Spencer).

It opens with Conor Whatley's study of unit sizes during Justinian's wars, which employs a wide diversity of sources to argue that sixth-century Roman unit sizes were standardized, and that Procopius's figures are generally reliable. Georgios Theotokis uses Maurice's Strategikon to highlight that the toolkit of Byzantine strategists, in Clausewitzian terms, included the "strategy of annihilation," not just the "strategy of exhaustion". Christopher P. Flynn's new analysis of Andernach (876) likewise addresses the role of decisive battle in medieval strategy, examining Charles the Bald's decision to force an engagement against Louis the Younger in the context of the volatile politics of the time, as well reconstructing the battle's course. Intelligence and counterintelligence take center stage in David Bachrach's study of the Salian era, showing how Henry IV and Rudolph of Rheinfelden collected information, and sought to conceal it from their enemies, during the crises of the 1070s. John France's essay on the Field of Blood (1119) illuminates how terrain shaped operational and tactical choices, while L.J. Andrew Villalon's discussion of Alfonso X's Las Siete Partidas demonstrates how it encompassed a systematic military treatise - far more than a medieval echo of Vegetius - both reflecting and revealing Iberia's thirteenth-century realities. The volume concludes with Michael Livingston's presentation of new evidence on the disputed location of the battle of Crécy (1346), in the form of a local monument near Domvast dedicated to the battle's fallen.
