Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,5, Technical University of Chemnitz, course: Hauptseminar: Comparative Studies - the Interwar Period in Britain and the USA, language: English, abstract: In the beginning, Roosevelt had to face a widespread economic disaster which covered all sectors: the banking had collapsed so that most people lost all their money and lifetime savings; the agriculture, more than the other sectors, suffered from the depression by overproduction and falling prices; and the industry urgently required recovery. First of all, Roosevelt proclaimed "e;a three-day 'bank holiday'"e; and shortly after that the Emergency Banking Relief Act (EBRA) to restore the collapsed banking. The Agricultural Adjustment Act(AAA) was an attempt to solve the agricultural difficulties, and the recovery of the industry should be achieved by the National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA). The resulting most predominant and urgent problem in all sectors was increasing unemployment and impoverishment which Roosevelt attacked by varying make-work programs. He was aware of the alarming dimensions of this problem. Regarding this fact, taking the jobless to work was Roosevelt s most important concern and as it was the basis of the well-being and prosperity of the nation it had priority over all other problems. What sets Roosevelt apart from the other presidents was his faith in the future and his ability to convince the American people that they must also believe in the future to regain a normal way of life. Roosevelt s work relief programs, especially during the First Hundred Days, have repeatedly been debated up to this day. There have always been controversial discussions about the effects and failures. For all that reasons, in my paper I will concentrate on the make-work programs and examine its positive and also negative effects. In the first part I will shortly outline the situation before Roosevelt s presidency and his election pledge, and I will generally define the term. Further, I will have a closer look on the chronologically ordered programs of the First New Deal. I am going to define each measure, demonstrate the effects, achievements, and also the negative side effects respectively criticism. The second part focused the make-work measures of the Second New Deal in a similar way. I will give an overview of the regular earnings in contrast to the earnings under work relief and WPA in a table. My intention is to give an assessment of the positive and negative results and achievements. I will examine to what extent Roosevelt was able to fulfil his promise and whether the programs were successful on a long term basis.

While in grammar books sentence structure is always precisely ordered, in naturally occurring spoken language we often deal with syntactically incomplete utterances which are not exactly arranged as described in grammar books Furthermore, the most important difference between theory and real life is that grammar books focus on form is described rather than function. (see Weisser, 2002:3). From these differences several problems arise which I will examine in this paper. In the first section I will give a general definition of the term question as well as a classification of question types according to Quirk et al. (1985). In the second part I will analyse each question type by working out the differences between the theory of Quirk et al. (1985) and Tsui (1992). On the one hand, I will always compare the theory of Quirk et al. with the contrastive, more practically orientated theory of Tsui. On the other hand, I will substantiate Tsui s theory with examples from the trainline corpus in order to demonstrate that her analysis is correct. Further, I will analyse to which extent the trainline examples are applicable to the theories.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Chemnitz, course: Proseminar: Charlotte Bronte "e;Jane Eyre"e;, language: English, abstract: Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre is a lively composition of the imagery of landscape in correspondence to the experiences and the values of the heroine. Nature, one of the major themes in the novel, is expressed by four natural elements: fire, water, earth, and air, which are in a constant interaction. Fire, the most important element, has a symbolic function in the novel. Above all, it forms the character of the heroine Jane Eyre. Moreover, the varying facets of fire are a basic component of the novel and a determinant part in each locale of the setting. The story is a classic example of the congruence of the natural and the spiritual: the natural existence of fire is always related to Jane Eyre s state of mind and expressed by metaphors (Duthie 1986:134-137). In the first chapter of my paper I will give a general definition of the term and analyse the symbolism of the different types of the element on the basis of examples. In the next chapter I will have a closer look at the element fire in relation to Jane Eyre s state of mind.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, Technical University of Chemnitz, course: Hauptseminar: 19th-Century Horror: Frankenstein, Dracula, Jekyll & Hyde, language: English, abstract: Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886) is regarded as one of the most famous of all stories relating to doubles. The term Doppelganger, coined by Jean-Paul Richter in 1796, was hallowed by the Romantic Movement and became particularly popular in the 19th century caused by social upheavals and the consequences of the industrial revolution (cf. Fernandez Bravo 1992:343, 366). Beside the Doppelganger motif, Stevenson's writing reflects to a great degree the circumstances of the Victorian age. On the one hand, the 1880s were the time of the development of sciences and psychology. On the other hand, the life was influenced by the established religion raising morality to the highest norm and demanding repression of desires and sexuality. Resulting from this, "e;a split within the self"e; was realized not only by authors but by the whole society (op. cit.:365). Consequently, the "e;Freudian concept of the split personality appeared in literature before the actual theory itself was proposed"e; (ibid.). Doppelganger as well as split personalities became a common motif and were "e;used to explore issues of identity, sexuality and morality"e; (Bell 1992:176). According to Stevenson's wife, one of the most important influences was "e;another strange case of 'multiple personality'"e; by which Stevenson was "e;deeply impressed"e; (Showalter 2000:190). While he was writing Jekyll and Hyde, the author read in the Archives de Neurologie, a French journal on sub-consciousness, the case of Louis V., who was a male hysteric that "e;underwent a startling metamorphosis"e; beginning in his adolescence (ibid., cf. ibid.). All these facts in addition to Stevenson's passionate aim 'to find a body, a vehicle for that strong sense of man's double being' which he had felt as a student in Edinburgh when he dreamed of leading 'a double life - one of the day, one of the night'"e; may have been his inspirations which culminated in the writing of the novel (Stevenson quoted in op. cit.:191).
