Qu’est-ce que la « crise des migrants » en Europe ? Cette expression simple, parée des attributs de l’évidence, s’est imposée dans le débat public depuis 2015. Parfois également nommée « crise des réfugiés », elle fait référence à l’augmentation récente et massive des entrées en Europe de populations en provenance notamment de pays déstabilisés, voire en guerre : Syrie, Afghanistan, Érythrée, etc.L’objectif de cet ouvrage est de fournir des clés de compréhension en prenant de la distance par rapport aux représentations communes du phénomène. Pour éclairer l’actualité des mouvements migratoires vers l’Europe, il prend le parti de ne pas traiter seulement des évènements récents et d’élargir le champ géographique au-delà des frontières du Vieux Continent. Dépasser les discours sensationnalistes des médias, qui fondent les peurs de l’invasion et les fantasmes du repli sur soi, nécessite en effet de décentrer le regard.Le décentrement par les chiffres contribue à prendre la mesure des faits migratoires tels qu’ils sont : sans en masquer l’importance, mais en en précisant l’ampleur et les caractéristiques. Le décentrement historique, ensuite, permet à propos de la crise actuelle de dépasser l’illusion du « jamais vu » sans tomber dans celle du « toujours ainsi ». Enfin, le décentrement géographique remet en cause une représentation des migrations internationales qui seraient réduites à des flux orientés des pays « pauvres » vers les pays « riches ».Cris Beauchemin et Mathieu Ichou sont chercheurs à l’Institut national d’études démographiques (Ined) au sein de l’unité « Migrations internationales et minorités ». This book provides the main findings of a ground-breaking survey on immigrants and the second generation in France. The data, collected from more than 20, 000 persons representative of the population living in France, offer invaluable insights into the trajectories and experience of ethnic minorities.The book explains how France has been an immigrant-receiving country for over a century and how it is now a multicultural society with an unprecedented level of origin diversity. While immigrants and their descendants are targets of clichés and stereotyping, this book provides unique quantitative findings on their situation in all areas of personal and working life.Is origin in itself a factor of inequality? With its detailed reconstitutions of educational, occupational and conjugal trajectories and its exploration of access to housing and health, this book provides multiple approaches to answering this question.One of the work’s major contributions is tocombine objective and subjective measures of discrimination: this is the first study in France to focus on racism as experienced by those subjected to it, while opening up new methodological perspectives on the experience of prejudice by origin, religion, and skin colour.

By comparing six European countries (Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK), it shows that the dynamics of migration differ greatly in new vs. old destination countries.Based on a statistical analysis of life histories, this study provides a dynamic view of migration that will help readers better understand current trends as well as future trajectories.
