1950s New York. On the stage at Birdland is Pee Wee Marquette, the 3'9" MC, dressed in a zoot suit and loud tie, smoking a huge cigar, and mispronouncing the name of the next act. Pee Wee is just one of the many characters that have made Bill Crow's forty years in jazz seem like an instant. In the same key as his acclaimed Jazz Anecdotes, this collection of revealing, hilarious, and sometimes moving stories runs the full gamut of New York's nightspots, introducing us along the way to the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Stan Getz, Billie Holliday, Yul Brynner, and Simon and Garfunkel.

This is the first volume to address directly the question of the speciation of modern Homo sapiens. The subject raises profound questions about the nature of the species, our defining characteristic (it is suggested it is language), and the brain changes and their genetic basis that make us distinct. The British Academy and the Academy of Medical Sciences have brought together experts from palaeontology, archaeology, linguistics, psychology, genetics and evolutionary theory to present evidence and theories at the cutting edge of our understanding of these issues.Palaeontological and genetic work suggests that the transition from a precursor hominid species to modern man took place between 100,000 and 150,000 years ago. Some contributors discuss what is most characteristic of the species, focussing on language and its possible basis in brain lateralization. This work is placed in the context of speciation theory, which has remained a subject of considerable debate since the evolutionary synthesis of Mendelian genetics and Darwinian theory. The timing of specific transitions in hominid evolution is discussed, as also is the question of the neural basis of language. Other contributors address the possible genetic nature of the transition, with reference to changes on the X and Y chromosomes that may account for sex differences in lateralization and verbal ability. These differences are discussed in terms of the theory of sexual selection, and with reference to the mechanisms of speciation. These essays will be vital reading for anyone interested in the nature and origins of the species, and specifically human abilities.

Presenting the first comprehensive review of the subject's theory and applications inmore than 15 years, this outstanding reference encompasses the most-up-to-date advances in lognormal distributions in thorough, detailed contributions by specialists in statistics, business and economics, industry, biology, ecology, geology, and meteorology. Lognormal Distributions describes the theory and methods of point and intervalestimation as well as the testing of hypotheses clearly and precisely from a modemviewpoint-not only for the basic two-parameter lognormal distribution but also for itsgeneralizations, including three parameters, truncated distributions, delta-lognormaldistributions, and two or more dimensions.Featuring over 600 references plus author and subject indexes, this volume rev iews thesubject's history .. . gives explicit formulas for minimum variance unbiased estimates ofparameters and their variances ... provides optimal tests of hypotheses and confidenceinterval procedures for various functions of the parameters in the two-parameter model. .. and discusses practical methods of analysis for truncated, censored, or groupedsamples.
