This book, first published in 2002, contains an introduction to hyperbolic partial differential equations and a powerful class of numerical methods for approximating their solution, including both linear problems and nonlinear conservation laws. These equations describe a wide range of wave propagation and transport phenomena arising in nearly every scientific and engineering discipline. Several applications are described in a self-contained manner, along with much of the mathematical theory of hyperbolic problems. High-resolution versions of Godunov's method are developed, in which Riemann problems are solved to determine the local wave structure and limiters are then applied to eliminate numerical oscillations. These methods were originally designed to capture shock waves accurately, but are also useful tools for studying linear wave-propagation problems, particularly in heterogenous material. The methods studied are implemented in the CLAWPACK software package and source code for all the examples presented can be found on the web, along with animations of many of the simulations. This provides an excellent learning environment for understanding wave propagation phenomena and finite volume methods.

A First Course in Combinatorial Optimization is a text for a one-semester introductory graduate-level course for students of operations research, mathematics, and computer science. It is a self-contained treatment of the subject, requiring only some mathematical maturity. Topics include: linear and integer programming, polytopes, matroids and matroid optimization, shortest paths, and network flows. Central to the exposition is the polyhedral viewpoint, which is the key principle underlying the successful integer-programming approach to combinatorial-optimization problems. Another key unifying topic is matroids. The author does not dwell on data structures and implementation details, preferring to focus on the key mathematical ideas that lead to useful models and algorithms. Problems and exercises are included throughout as well as references for further study.

This textbook is an introduction to the theory of solitons and its diverse applications to nonlinear systems that arise in the physical sciences. The authors explain the generation and properties of solitons, introducing the mathematical technique known as the Inverse Scattering Transform. Their aim is to present the essence of inverse scattering clearly, rather than rigorously or completely. Thus, the prerequisites (i.e., partial differential equations, calculus of variations, Fourier integrals, linear waves and Sturm-Liouville theory), and more advanced material is explained in the text with useful references to further reading given at the end of each chapter. Worked examples are frequently used to help the reader follow the various ideas, and the exercises at the end of each chapter not only contain applications but also test understanding. Answers, or hints to the solution, are given at the end of the book. Sections and exercises that contain more difficult material are indicated by asterisks.

In spite of its universality, mixing is poorly understood and generally speaking, mixing problems are attacked on a case-by-case basis. This is the first book to present a unified treatment of the mixing of fluids from a kinematical viewpoint. The author's aim is to provide a conceptually clear basis from which to launch analysis and to facilitate an understanding of the numerous mixing problems encountered in nature and technology. After presenting the necessary background in kinematics and fluid dynamics, Professor Ottino considers various examples of dealing with necessary background in dynamical systems and chaos. The book assumes little previous knowledge of fluid dynamics and dynamical systems and can be used as a textbook by final-year undergraduates, graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics, engineering science, geophysics and physics who have an interest in fluid dynamics, continuum mechanics and dynamical systems. It is profusely illustrated in colour, with many line diagrams and half-tones. Systems which illustrate the most important concepts, many exercises and examples are included.

Perturbation methods are one of the fundamental tools used by all applied mathematicians and theoretical physicists. In this book, the author has managed to present the theory and techniques underlying such methods in a manner which will give the text wide appeal to students from a broad range of disciplines. Asymptotic expansions, strained coordinates and multiple scales are illustrated by copious use of examples drawn from all areas of applied mathematics and theoretical physics. The philosophy adopted is that there is no single or best method for such problems, but that one may exploit the small parameter given some experience and understanding of similar perturbation problems. The author does not look to perturbation methods to give quantitative answers but rather to give a physical understanding of the subtle balances in a complex problem.

This book concentrates upon the mathematical theory of plasticity and fracture as opposed to the physical theory of these fields, and is presented in the thermomechanical framework. It follows the macroscopic, phenomenological approach which proposes equations abstracted from generally accepted experimental facts, studies the adequacy of the consequences drawn from these equations to those facts and then provides useful tools for designers and engineers. The material is drawn from the author's graduate course in Europe and the United States and may be used to form the basis for similar graduate courses on plasticity and fracture. Many worked examples are presented and each chapter concludes with problems for students. The book will thus undoubtedly establish itself as a core text for both students and researchers.

The investigation of nonlinear phenomena in acoustics has a rich history stretching back to the mechanical physical sciences in the nineteenth century. The study of nonlinear phenomena, such as explosions and jet engines, prompted the sharp growth of interest in nonlinear acoustic phenomena. The authors consider models of different 'acoustic' media as well as equations and behaviour of finite-amplitude waves. Consideration is given to the effects of nonlinearity, dissipation, dispersion, and for two- and three-dimensional problems, reflection and diffraction upon the evolution and interaction of acoustic beams. This book presents a coherent introduction to boundary integral, boundary element and singularity methods for steady and unsteady flow at zero Reynolds number. The focus of the discussion is not only on the theoretical foundation, but also on the practical application and computer implementation. The text is supplemented with a number of examples and unsolved problems, many drawn from the field of particulate creeping flows. Many phenomena in nature, engineering or society when seen at an intermediate distance, in space or time, exhibit the remarkable property of self-similarity: they reproduce themselves as scales change, subject to so-called scaling laws. It's crucial to know the details of these laws, so that mathematical models can be properly formulated and analysed, and the phenomena in question can be more deeply understood. In this 2003 book, the author describes and teaches the art of discovering scaling laws, starting from dimensional analysis and physical similarity, which are here given a modern treatment. He demonstrates the concepts of intermediate asymptotics and the renormalisation group as natural attributes of self-similarity and shows how and when these notions and tools can be used to tackle the task at hand, and when they cannot. This book develops the theory of global attractors for a class of parabolic PDEs which includes reaction-diffusion equations and the Navier-Stokes equations, two examples that are treated in detail. A lengthy chapter on Sobolev spaces provides the framework that allows a rigorous treatment of existence and uniqueness of solutions for both linear time-independent problems (Poisson's equation) and the nonlinear evolution equations which generate the infinite-dimensional dynamical systems of the title. Wave propagation and scattering are among the most fundamental processes that we use to comprehend the world around us.
