This posthumous edition of Dr Walters' The Text of the Septuagint provides a valuable working tool for specialists in Hellenistic and Classical Greek and the Old and New Testaments. The book is directed first to the practical task of producing a critical edition of the Septuagint, the Greek version of the Old Testament. Byzantine and Renaissance scholars both regarded the Greek Old Testament as belonging to the Church rather than to the heritage of classical literature which formed the proper object of their critical endeavours. It was therefore reproduced for centuries in much the same corrupt form and no complete critical edition was produced. The present work is a detailed study of the grammatical corruptions and semitisms in the LXX and is intended to stand as the prolegomenon to such an edition.

The fourth book in this established series of monographs on aspects of Old Testament studies is a detailed analysis of two passages that may well hold the key to the major textual problems raised by the ancient Greek translation of 1 Kings (3 Reigns in the Septuagint). The existence of these two extended passages, standing in 3 Reigns 2 at verses 35 and 46, has long been noticed and partial studies have been made by some scholars. In the present study Dr Gooding not only offers a detailed analysis of all the diverse elements that go to make up these passages but also demonstrates that these originally diverse elements, many of which were themselves either variant readings or alternative translations and interpretations of the Hebrew, have been carefully edited and arranged by some ancient scholar-exegete to form a discourse or midrash on two aspects of Soloman's reign. This monograph will therefore be of interest not only to Septuagintal experts but also to all who are interested in the history of Biblical interpretation and canon.

The relation of the Septuagint to the original Hebrew is of major importance to the study of the Old Testament. In the closing chapters of Exodus this relation becomes notoriously obscure; in recording the execution of God's instructions for the making of the tabernacle and the priests' vestments, the Greek differs seriously both in order and content from our present Hebrew text. This raises the problem of how the Greek and Hebrew accounts came to stand in their present form, why they differ so widely, and which represents the older tradition. Scholars during the last century have been almost unanimous in maintaining that the Greek account is earlier than the Hebrew and is translated from a primitive (and now supposedly lost) text. Moreover, because of inconsistencies in technical terms, this part of the Greek Exodus is thought to be the work of a second translator. Dr Gooding puts forward a completely different explanation. This lively, clearly written and controversial book will be of particular interest to theologians and biblical scholars.
