This book interrogates the common perception that liberal peace is in crisis and explores the question: can the local turn save liberal peacebuilding?

Presenting a case for a liberal renaissance in peacebuilding, the work interrogates the assumptions behind the popular perception that liberal peace is in crisis. It re-examines three of the cases igniting the debate – Cambodia, Kosovo, and Timor-Leste – and evaluates how these transitional administrations implemented their liberal mandates and how local involvement affected the conduct of their activities. In so doing, it reveals that these cases were neither liberal nor peacebuilding. It also demonstrates that while local involvement is imperative to peacebuilding, illiberal local involvement restores an elite-centred status quo and reinforces or creates new forms of conflict and violence. Using both liberal and critical lenses, the author ultimately argues that the conceptual and operational departure from the holistic and comprehensive origins of liberal peacebuilding in fact paved the way for the liberal peace crisis itself.

Drawing on analysis from in-depth field research and interviews, this book will be of much interest to students of peacebuilding, peacekeeping, statebuilding, security studies and International Relations in general.

This book provides new insights into the development of integrated approaches to peace and sustainability in the era of global change. Since the late 1980s, and in order to regulate the increasingly detrimental impacts of humans on the environment, the transition towards sustainability has been high on the agenda of researchers and policymakers alike. Meanwhile, peace considerations have expanded in recent decades to include the varied types and sources of conflict, from inter-state to intra-state conflicts due to various social, political, economic, and environmental factors. This book, a sequel to a well-received book titled “Bridging Peace and Sustainability Amidst Global Transformations,” delves deeper into the entwined roots of peace and sustainability and emphasizes their interdependence. How are peace and sustainability interconnected, and what key factors define the relationship between them? These questions were examined at the NERPS 2024 conference in Hiroshima and are central to our narrative. In this book, we explore the synergy of peace and sustainability through theoretical frameworks and real-world examples.We recognize that while the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has acknowledged the link between peace and sustainability, a significant gap remains. Too often, efforts to promote peace and sustainability run parallel, never intertwining, losing the chance to bolster each other. We argue for merging the peace and sustainability agendas to confront contemporary challenges, calling for action to enhance and take advantage of their mutual reinforcement. Through diverse perspectives, this collection illuminates the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of this nexus, serving as a guide for policymakers, a reference for researchers, and a catalyst for dialogue among sectors committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

This book is the sequel to a well-received book titled ‘Integrated Approaches to Peace and Sustainability’ that aims to further advance the understanding of the dynamic interactions between various components of peace and sustainability. How are peace and sustainability linked to each other, and what are the key parameters that define the nexus between them? This book addresses those questions through a combination of theoretical studies and empirical research that contextualize peace and sustainability issues amid global transformations. The conceptual and empirical linkages between peace and sustainability are widely recognized in academic and policy circles. The adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development confirms this recognition. However, many of the initiatives on peace and sustainability operate in silos, undermining the positive and mutually reinforcing relationship between them. Enhanced integration of peace and sustainability components is imperative for addressing complex challenges that come with global transformations that are manifested environmentally, socially, politically, and economically across levels. It is, therefore, crucial to identify the pathways that enhance the peace-promoting potential of sustainability and the sustainability-promoting potential of peace. The contributions in this edited book elaborate on such pathways by offering insights related to different social, economic, and environmental aspects of the peace-sustainability nexus. Given its inter- and trans-disciplinary focus, the book is of interest to policymakers and researchers working in different areas of peace and sustainability.
